When the iPhone 7 was launched, Apple bravely and decisively abandoned the 3.5mm headphone jack and subsequently released AirPods. Over the past few years, AirPods have become one of the most popular Bluetooth audio accessories in the world, with nearly 115 million units sold in 2020 alone. Since then, AirPods has been improved and evolved many times, and each generation has improved in terms of sound quality, comfort and auxiliary functions.
Are all AirPods waterproof? Read all the information you need to know at once
The latest AirPods 4 now have noise reduction capabilities, and have added many useful features, such as support for USB-C and wireless charging. The design of the charging box and the AirPods body have also been reduced, making them easier to carry and less noticeable when worn. So, are you wondering if your AirPods are waterproof?
Apple currently has several different models of AirPods, including the latest fourth-generation AirPods (with and without noise cancellation). You also have the more expensive AirPods Pro 2 and the over-the-ear AirPods Max to choose from. With the exception of the AirPods 3, all of these devices offer water resistance to varying degrees. Below we have compiled the water resistance capabilities of each AirPods model:
- AirPods Pro 1: Sweat and water resistant with an IPX4 rating, but neither the MagSafe nor the wireless charging case is waterproof.
- AirPods 3: Sweat and water resistant with IPX4 rating, includes protection for Lightning and MagSafe charging cases.
- AirPods Pro 2: Sweat- and water-resistant, Lightning Edition MagSafe charging case has an IPX4 rating. It’s dustproof, sweatproof, waterproof, and if you’re using the newer USB-C MagSafe charging case, it has an IP54 rating.
- AirPods 4: Dust-proof, sweat-proof, and waterproof. The regular model and noise-canceling (ANC) model have a protection level of IP54, including both charging boxes.
Although sweat- and water-resistant, Apple says there are no AirPods models that aren’t designed for water sports like swimming or showering. Your AirPods should be able to handle the occasional splash or drizzle, but other AirPods models not listed above, including AirPods Max, don’t have an official IP rating and are therefore not suitable for exercise.
As mentioned before, a few minor splashes pose no threat to the intended AirPods. However, if they have been exposed to water for a long time, it is best to dry them as soon as possible with a fine, dry cloth. Also, be sure to wait at least a few hours to dry before placing them back in the case to avoid further damage to the case.
