Google is rapidly developing the features of NotebookLM, an AI-powered service that also serves as an advanced learning tool. Last week, Gemini directly integrated NotebookLM, allowing users to pull notes and data sources into Gemini conversations. Other recent updates include Data Tables, a way to quickly visualize information and export it to Google Forms. Now, Google has officially confirmed that NotebookLM runs on the latest and most advanced Gemini models.

NotebookLM is now powered by Gemini 3 to enhance reasoning and multimodal understanding.
In a post on X, NotebookLM revealed that “NotebookLM is now officially built on Gemini 3.” Google calls Gemini 3 its most intelligent model, adding that this change brings significant improvements to NotebookLM’s reasoning and multimodal understanding.
Checking your holiday wishlists, there’s one request that’s coming up 3x more than anything else… 🥁
NotebookLM is OFFICIALLY built on Gemini 3!
Google’s most intelligent model, this brings significant improvements to NotebookLM’s reasoning and multimodal understanding.

Previously, NotebookLM was based on the Gemini 2.5 Flash model, and switching to Gemini 3 was a highly anticipated feature, delivering 3x the performance compared to before, according to Google. To use the latest Gemini 3 Flash and Pro models, NotebookLM users had to switch to the Gemini app. Now, the AI features within the NotebookLM app, including the chatbot, are powered by Gemini 3, making it easier for users to access directly from their projects.

It is currently unclear whether NotebookLM uses Gemini 3 Pro or Gemini 3 Flash, with the latter being a faster and lighter AI model released just last week. Historically, NotebookLM has included Flash versions of new Gemini models, so Gemini 3 Flash would be a safe choice. If this learning app truly runs on Gemini 3 Flash, that would be a major upgrade. According to Google, this model delivers “frontier intelligence built for speed at extremely low cost” and outperforms Gemini 2.5 Pro. However, Google has stated that NotebookLM now offers better multimodal reasoning and comprehension capabilities, which may suggest Gemini 3 Pro is working behind the scenes.

Anyway, a fast and powerful Gemini 3 model is now powering the AI features in your NotebookLM projects. While there’s no model selector or badge display change like NotebookLM commonly has, you can now try it out in the app.
