Is it safe to use different laptop chargers to charge my computer?

If you have a laptop, it is likely to be equipped with a dedicated charger. It may not feel special at ordinary times, but if you find yourself in urgent need of recharging power but forget to bring the charger after going out, or find that the dedicated charger is broken and cannot charge, then you are very likely to encounter a situation where the laptop power is exhausted but you are helpless.

Is it safe to use different laptop chargers to charge my computer?

The problem with dedicated chargers is that they’re only compatible with specific devices, which means you’ll need to pack it specifically when you’re traveling, and depending on the cord length and charger size, it can be inconvenient to use. Additionally, if these chargers break, they can be expensive to replace, which is another reason many people choose to leave them at home.

Although no brand that ships with a dedicated charger recommends that you replace it with another charger, there may be other solutions depending on your laptop. While you can’t use any laptop charger with any laptop, there are simple USB-C options, like the one you use for your phone.

Can I use a USB-C charger with my laptop?

Whether you can use a USB-C charger depends largely on your laptop, but there is some good news. The European Union not only requires mobile devices to be USB-C compatible by the end of this year, but also requires laptops to be equipped with USB-C charging by spring 2026. Many manufacturers have already begun to produce laptop models that charge via USB-C and have expanded to markets outside the EU.

If your laptop still uses a dedicated charger, you must check whether the laptop has a USB-C port that provides power. PD (Power Delivery) is a USB standard that, with other improvements, can increase charging power levels to easily or with enough power to charge most laptops. Moreover, charging via USB-C PD is very safe. PDs have adjustable charging modes and the ability to properly manage power, so they are less likely to output too much wattage to the laptop while charging and cause damage.

It’s important to note that not all USB-C ports can charge laptops. The USB-C power port is designed for power delivery protocols, enabling charging capabilities of up to 100W. Ordinary USB-C ports are not designed with charging protocols in mind, so they can only be used to transfer data or be used with external devices. It’s true that you can still plug the charger into a non-PD USB-C port, but it won’t work.

Why do brands recommend their own chargers?

Although the risk of damaging your laptop with a USB-C charger is low, brands generally recommend that you don’t use anything other than a dedicated charger and charging cable.

One of the reasons has to do with wattage. If the charger you use has insufficient power supply wattage, the battery charging speed will be very slow; if the power supply power of the charger is too high, the laptop may be damaged. Even if there is a third-party dedicated charger suitable for your laptop, you need to check whether the wattage is within the laptop’s recommended range. USB-C PD makes this less of an issue, but there are still limitations, and if you have a laptop that requires a lot of power to charge, the PD may not be able to charge it efficiently.

Another reason is the transformer. The bulky transformer attached to some laptop power supplies absorbs the power from the AC plug and regulates it, ensuring your laptop always gets the right amount of power.

Considering the power and wattage characteristics, brands will usually only recommend that you use original chargers, as they are designed to meet the laptop’s power needs and reduce the risk of laptop damage.
