According to the latest report released by the Japanese police, a man suspected of threatening to blow up the Nintendo headquarters in Kyoto, Japan, with explosives has been arrested. In the relevant threatening letter sent at that time, the man stated that he had planted bombs around the company’s main building, but so far, the police are still continuing to clarify the man’s motives for issuing the bomb threat.
Just before this incident, Nintendo had just announced that it would adjust the price of its Switch 2 console. Due to shortages caused by the global memory crisis, the prices of many components remain high. Therefore, Nintendo officials have confirmed that they will increase the price of the Switch 2 console. As for whether there is a relationship between the two, it remains to be clarified later.
According to reports from Kansai TV and other media, the Japanese police confirmed that the suspect in this incident was a 27-year-old unemployed man. After his arrest, he also admitted that he had been sending multiple threatening messages to Nintendo since March this year. On March 13, one of the threatening letters was sent to Nintendo’s headquarters in Kyoto, and it contained a lot of threatening content, such as “I will blow you all up” and “This plan cannot be stopped.” This once led the company to completely suspend operations and evacuate its employees.
However, when police launched a large-scale search inside and around the headquarters building, no explosives were found. After a two-month investigation, the police successfully identified a 27-year-old man living in Hinan City, Aichi Prefecture, and arrested him on May 12 on the charge of “Weili business obstruction”, and the other party later confessed to the crime. Even though this incident was just a false report, the police still dare not take this type of behavior lightly and are continuing to clarify the details of the case.
It is worth noting that this is not the first time Nintendo has received bomb threats in recent years. For example, in 2024, another 27-year-old man also appeared in court for allegedly issuing multiple bomb threats to Nintendo. This series of threats led to the temporary cancellation of events such as “Nintendo Live Tokyo 2024” and the “Spla Dunk 3” Koshien 2023 National Finals. His motive for committing the crime was simply because he was dissatisfied with the content of the “Spla Dunk 3” game.
