Google continues to make small, practical improvements to the Gemini app on Android to enhance the user experience, but the app still falls short, especially given Gemini’s capabilities. Google is aware that both the web and mobile versions of the Gemini app need improvement, and it is now in active development.
Google teases major update for the Gemini app
In a reply under a post on X about the Gemini app’s frontend not being as good as ChatGPT’s, Google AI Studio and Gemini API head Logan Kilpatrick confirmed that Google is investing significant resources in Gemini App UX 2.0. The current Gemini app doesn’t fully leverage all its capabilities; with a redesigned interface, Google can showcase Gemini’s impressive work and make everyday features more accessible.

Logan Kilpatrick also revealed that Google is developing a native Gemini app for macOS. ChatGPT offers native apps for both Windows and Mac, making it more convenient to use. Additionally, it can provide advanced features such as native integration with apps like Notion, Terminal, and Apple Notes. In contrast, the only way to access Gemini on a PC is through a web browser, which works but feels clunkier and less polished than ChatGPT’s native app.
More importantly, as AI models begin to offer agentic capabilities, native apps will help them better handle local files and integrate smoothly with other applications on your computer. It looks like Google’s Gemini team is aware of this, which is why they’re developing a native Mac app. There’s no release timeline yet, but considering how quickly Google rolls out Gemini updates, the wait shouldn’t be too long.
Google is also developing a native Google AI Studio app for iPhone and Android, called “Build Anything.” According to a reply from Ammar Reshi, Google AI Studio’s Chief Product and Design Officer, the app may still be some time away from launching. However, if you use AI Studio often, a dedicated mobile app lets you keep vibe coding even when you’re on the go.
