Google Maps gains Gemini capabilities, with four all-new features making navigation more useful
Google announced on its blog that Google Maps is officially getting the Gemini upgrade, making the navigation experience smarter and more convenient, with four new features on the way.
1. Hands-free driving experience
With the integration of Gemini AI, in the future you can directly ask the AI for any map information using natural language conversation, such as EV charging stations, gas stations, nearby convenience stores, a restaurant’s signature dishes, and more. Even sharing your estimated arrival time with friends is no problem—Gemini will automatically handle and complete all of these tasks.
Of course, multi-step requests are also supported, such as: “Are there any affordable restaurants along the way that also serve vegetarian meals? Just within a few kilometers from me. And what’s the parking situation there?” After Gemini answers, you can then say: “Okay, let’s go there then.”
You can even add: “By the way, add a soccer practice calendar event for tomorrow at 5 PM.” Gemini will automatically connect to Google Calendar and add the event. You never have to take your hands off the wheel the entire time.
Additionally, if you see any road conditions you’d like to report while driving, just say something like “there’s an accident ahead,” “looks like there’s flooding up ahead,” or “there’s heavy traffic over there, be careful,” and the road conditions will be reported instantly.
This new feature will roll out on Android and iOS in the coming weeks (in regions where Gemini is supported), with an Android Auto version coming soon.
2. Navigation finally supports landmark guidance.
When navigating, you’ve surely heard “turn right in 500 meters,” but for many people, it’s hard to tell how far that really is, and they still need to check Google Maps to see if they’re almost there.
Now with Gemini, in addition to traffic lights and stop signs, navigation will also announce prominent landmarks along the way, such as gas stations, restaurants, and famous buildings. You’ll hear instructions like: “Turn right after Thai Siam restaurant,” and the map will also highlight that landmark so you can quickly identify it.
Google stated: “Gemini analyzes the latest and most complete data for 250 million locations on Google Maps, combined with Street View imagery, to select practical landmarks that are most easily recognizable from the street, making navigation more precise and intuitive.”
However, unfortunately, this feature is currently being rolled out only on Android and iOS devices in the US, and it’s unclear when it will be expanded to other countries.
3. You’ll receive a warning before traffic congestion occurs.
Even without navigation mode turned on, Google Maps will now proactively notify you of traffic conditions ahead, such as road closures or severe congestion, so you can react quickly. The “Proactive Traffic Alerts” feature has launched first on Android in the United States; whether it will come to iOS and other countries is still unknown.
With Gemini’s Lens, it’s easier to explore new places.
After arriving at your destination, you can tap the camera icon on the search bar and point your phone’s camera at a restaurant, café, shop, or landmark you see. When a pin appears on the screen, tap the microphone icon to start a conversation with Gemini. You can ask things like “What are the highly-rated dishes at this restaurant?”, “Does this bakery sell croissants?”, “What is this place? Why is it so popular?”, or “What’s the atmosphere like inside?”
Lens features integrated with Gemini will roll out later this month on Android and iOS in the US.
So, aside from the first feature that Taiwan has a chance to get right at launch, the other new features may still need some waiting.
