Microsoft DirectX ASD technology officially supports AMD graphics cards! Game loading time for XBOX PC players changes from 90 seconds to 4 seconds

One of the biggest pain points for every PC gamer for a long time is the long waiting time for shader compilation when starting the game for the first time, sometimes even as long as more than ten minutes, and having to do it all over again after updating the graphics card driver. Now, this problem finally has a new solution. Microsoft recently officiallyAnnounce, DirectX Advanced Shader Delivery (ASD) technology has been extended to AMD’s full range of graphics cards, covering the three major architectures of RDNA 3, RDNA 3.5 and RDNA 4. Now all three PC graphics card manufacturers have supported it.

This technology, jointly developed by Microsoft’s Xbox division and AMD, was first unveiled at Gamescom 2025 and was originally tailored for the ROG Xbox Ally handheld console. Now, with the official joining of the AMD camp, ASD has reached the milestone of having all the three major GPU manufacturers, NVIDIA, AMD, and Intel, marking that the game shader compilation problem that has troubled PC players for a long time may be about to go into history.

ASD technology principle: moving shader compilation to the cloud

The so-called “shader compilation lag” means that when the game is first started, the CPU needs to compile a large amount of shader code on the fly. This process not only results in long loading times, but also causes screen freezes during the game due to the real-time compilation of shaders for new scenes. In the past few years, developers could only alleviate the problem by “pre-compiling on the title screen”, but this only addressed the symptoms rather than the root cause.

The core idea of ​​Microsoft ASD technology is quite straightforward:Move the compilation work to the cloud and complete it in advance. According to the detailed description of the Microsoft DirectX team on the official development blog, the specific process is:

Game developers collect and organize shader data and package it into a standardized “State Object Database” (State Object Database, SODB). Then the DirectX team successfully separated the shader compiler from the graphics card driver, allowing the game data in the SODB to be combined with the cloud compiler, ultimately generating a “Precompiled Shader Database” (PSDB) that can be used directly.

When a user downloads a game from the Microsoft Store or Xbox PC client, ASD technology will automatically identify the device’s unique configuration such as game version, graphics card model, and driver version, and download the corresponding precompiled shader files in advance. This mechanism was originally designed to solve the storage space and computing resource limitations of handheld consoles such as ROG Xbox Ally, and has now been extended to the entire Windows PC ecosystem.

When starting the game, all necessary shaders have been preset in the Windows cache, completely skipping the compilation step on the local side, and achieving the effect of “getting into the game in seconds”. Even if the graphics driver is updated, the system will automatically detect and update the shader cache, eliminating the need to wait for lengthy recompilation.

The actual test results are amazing: shortened from 90 seconds to 4 seconds

According to actual measurement data released by Microsoft, on a test platform equipped with AMD Radeon RX 7600 graphics card and Ryzen 7 5800 processor, after turning on ASD technology, the first loading time of “Forza Horizon 6” increased from nearly 90 seconds plummets to 4 seconds, a decrease of up to 95%, and shader-related stuttering during gameplay is almost completely eliminated. PC Gamer also pointed out in its test report that this technology is revolutionary for improving the first boot experience.

This achievement is of great significance for large-scale 3A games that often weigh tens of GB. In the past, when players opened open-world masterpieces such as Forza Horizon 6, they had to wait for a minute and a half just to enter the main menu. Now it only takes a few seconds.

AMD has all its troops in place: all three major GPU manufacturers support it

ASD technology first debuted exclusively on the ROG Xbox Ally handheld console in 2025, and was later incorporated into the DirectX SDK and gradually expanded to the NVIDIA GeForce RTX series and Intel Arc series graphics cards. The absence of the AMD camp has left many A-card players in despair. Now, as Microsoft has expanded ASD from handheld platforms to RDNA 3, RDNA 3.5 and RDNA 4 architectures, covering the entire series of RX 7000, RX 8000 and RX 9000 products, and even the Radeon 700M and 800M series of internal graphics are also supported, AMD users can finally enjoy the same technology dividends.

From an industry perspective, this also represents an important signal:The issue of shader compilation is moving from GPU manufacturers fighting independently to a unified DirectX ecosystem standardized solution. NVIDIA also launched its own Auto Shader Compile (ASC) function in the NVIDIA App beta version in April 2026, which can rebuild the DirectX 12 shader cache in advance when the system is idle, shortening the waiting time after driver updates. In addition, Intel has already expressed support, and the three major camps have reached the same goal on the road to shader optimization. However, Microsoft’s ASD has an advantage in the first startup experience due to its cloud pre-compiled architecture.

Activation conditions and first batch of supported games

To enable the ASD feature, players need to meet the following conditions:

– operating system: Windows 11 24H2 or newer
– Xbox Gaming Services:37.113.11003.0 or higher
– Insider Program: Join the Xbox Insider Hub’s PC Gaming Preview program
– Graphics card driver: AMD users need to update to Adrenalin 26.5.2 or higher driver (this driver was released on May 15 and also fixed the crash problem of the RX 9000 series in games such as “RoadCraft” and “Satisfactory”)
– Game source: Currently only available for games downloaded through the Xbox PC client or Microsoft Store (The Steam version is not supported yet)

The first games to support ASD include Forza Horizon 6 and Bond 007: First Class. It is worth noting that Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 5 announced in April 2026 that it would integrate Microsoft’s ASD functionality, which means that future games developed with UE5 will have the opportunity to support this technology.
