exist Google I/O 2026 At the end of the keynote speech, Suz Chamber, Google’s senior vice president of devices and services, handed the stage to Shahram Izadi, vice president of engineering, and officially unveiled the complete look of Android XR smart glasses. From the display glasses prototype previewed last year to the audio glasses products released for the first time this year, as well as in-depth cooperation with first-line brands such as Samsung, Gentle Monster, Warby Parker, etc., Google has finally demonstrated its complete strategy to enter the AI glasses market.

Android XR platform: AI-driven new interface for computing

Android XR is a platform that Google has announced at Google I/O 2025 last year, but no actual product has been seen in the past year (to say the least, only Chinese manufacturers’ smart glasses are close to the HTC Vive Eagle). Google has cooperated with Qualcomm to optimize Snapdragon chips. The core feature of the platform is the deep integration of Gemini into the hardware, allowing AI to provide immediate assistance in the user’s current scenario without interrupting the user’s experience.

Gemini will be a key core component of Google’s Android XR glasses, allowing them to respond to voice commands, stream live video, and run Android apps.

Two major product lines: display glasses and audio glasses

The next major milestone for Android XR is “Intelligent Eyewear”, which comes in two types:

  • Display Glasses: Equipped with a micro-lens display that can project real-time information in front of the user’s eyes. For example, directly view Uber pickup details, perform instant translation, or use the “Create My Widget” function to customize glance-able information widgets. The first developers are already building display experiences, and Google will expand the Trusted Tester program later this year.

  • Audio Glasses: It does not have a display, but directly transmits Gemini’s voice feedback to the user’s ears through the built-in speaker, keeping hands free and eyesight from the real world. Ideal for listening to music, taking photos, making calls, or accessing mobile apps without taking out your phone.

Audio glasses will be launched this fall

Shahram officially announced on stage that the first Android XR audio glasses will be available in the fall of 2026.

These glasses are designed to be worn around the clock, with Gemini’s assistance delivered privately into your ears in the form of voice. Shahram himself shared usage scenarios: He likes to cook but doesn’t like to follow recipes, and the Gemini on the glasses can provide suggestions before he messes up.

Dream collaboration lineup: Gentle Monster, Warby Parker, Samsung

The partner lineup for Android XR Glasses is an all-star one:

  • Gentle Monster: The world’s top eyewear designer brand, specializing in avant-garde and fashionable frame designs
  • Warby Parker: A popular American eyewear brand, focusing on affordable fashion and online trying-on experience

In addition, Shahram confirmed that these glasses will not only support Android, but will also be paired with iOS devices. Google is smarter this time. One of the reasons for the failure of Google Glass in 2013 was that it looked too “techy”. This time, Gentle Monster (a Korean fashion brand) and Warby Parker (the ancestor of the DTC glasses revolution) were invited to start with the appearance design to make the smart glasses look like a pair of normal glasses.

Live demonstration: Gemini’s complete capabilities in glasses

Shahram and Vice President of Product Nishtha Bhatia conducted a nearly 6-minute live demonstration. This was the first full functional demonstration of Android XR Glasses in public:

Smart Navigation and Personal Intelligence: Nishtha said directly to the glasses: “Navigate to the place where I met my friend Gianna last week.” Gemini not only recognized the location (Redwood Grove Natural Preserve), but also proactively asked: “Want to stop for cold brew coffee on the way?” Demonstrating that Personal Intelligence can understand the user’s interpersonal relationships and past activities.

Automate App Operations for DoorDash Ordering: What’s even more amazing is that Gemini can launch the DoorDash app directly on your phone, automatically operate all option screens, and complete the cold brew coffee ordering process. A picture of Nishtha’s mobile phone in her pocket was displayed on the screen. Gemini clicked on the options one by one, and finally just waited for the user to confirm the order. Nishtha even added an additional instruction of “add 20% tip”.

Message summary and calendar integration: Nishtha asks to see the messages she missed while in silent mode, and Gemini summarizes messages from the monks’ family meeting for dinner at 7pm and reminds her that she hasn’t done her daily affirmations yet. When she asked to add dinner to her calendar, Gemini automatically detected the slot “after the team celebration” and accurately added it to the schedule.

Nano Banana real-time image creation + watch preview: The climax was taking a selfie with the audience. Nishtha asked Gemini to take a picture of the entire audience, convert it directly into a cartoon style, and add a spaceship with “Google I/O 2026” written on it in the sky. Powered by Nano Banana image generation technology, this feature takes just seconds. Even more amazing is that the resulting image is automatically pushed to the watch on her wrist for preview.

Compared with pure voice question and answer, Gemini can take over the actual operation process of the mobile app (such as DoorDash ordering, adding calendar). This is the differentiated advantage of Android XR glasses compared to Meta Ray-Ban.

Conclusion

The Android XR smart glasses strategy demonstrated by Google at I/O 2026 is completely different from the first Google Glass attempt in 2013. This time Google did three completely different things: first, it found design partners (Gentle Monster, Warby Parker) who best understood the consumer market instead of making hardware itself; second, it cooperated in depth with Samsung to ensure mass production capabilities and quality; third, using Gemini as the core of intelligence, the glasses are not just passive vehicles for displaying information, but AI agents that can actively understand situations and perform tasks across apps.

The first telecom glasses will be launched in the fall of 2026, and the display glasses are expected to be launched in 2027 (to be honest, the progress is slower than expected). Now that Meta Ray-Ban has established itself in the market and has begun to open up its APP ecosystem, whether Google can catch up will depend on Gemini’s actual performance, the product design of its partners, and most importantly, whether consumers are willing to wear AI glasses on their faces. If you don’t want to wait, I personally think that HTC Vive Eagle should soon add updates with related or similar functions, so you can look forward to it.
