Ever since YouTube started fighting against Adblock, a friendly ad blocking extension like FadBlock has appeared. It does not block ads, but fast-forwards them. It became very popular immediately, especially FadBlock, which has been recommended by many websites. We also introduced. But it should be noted that, perhaps because of its reputation, the developer recently revealed that it has been found that the original FadBlock has been inserted into a malicious program. It has cooperated with the Chrome team to delete it and launched another new extension. It is recommended that those who have installed FadBlock check it. If it is not disabled, remove it manually as soon as possible.

The well-known “FadBlock Friendly Ad Blocker” was found to contain malicious programs, and the developer urgently launched another new extension function

0x48pira, the developer of “FadBlock friendly ad blocking”, recently GitHub projectsHe said that he is no longer the owner of the FadBlock extension. He handed over the extension more than a month ago and it seems to have been resold several times. He discovered that the current owner of the extension had secretly added malicious code, so he worked with the Google team to delete the malicious version:

Representatives say that if you have FadBlock installed, Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge should automatically disable the extension and no longer allow it to run. In any case, it is recommended to check it for peace of mind, and delete it quickly if it has not been deleted yet.

The Chrome extension store page of “FadBlock Friendly Ad Blocking” has now changed to 404:

As for what risks this malicious code will bring? The developer said that based on his and other collaborators’ investigations, nothing appears to have been transferred to the server, but one facilitator notified it of stealing Facebook cookies.

If you’re worried that your data has been stolen, 0x48pira suggests that the best thing to do is to delete all browser caches and change your Facebook password.

For netizens who want to continue to enjoy a friendly ad-blocking experience, the developer also immediately launched another new extension: “FadBlock Origin: Friendly YouTube Adblock”, you can install this one instead:

As for the Firefox version, 0x48pira mentioned that it was not given to anyone else, so there is no malicious program and you can continue to use it with confidence. For more related discussions, you can browse Reddit thisDiscussion thread.

Although the developer of the FadBlock incident responded quickly and asked Chrome to delete and notify everyone, the bottom line is that the developer sold his tool to others, which will cause these subsequent problems. Therefore, some users of the newly launched FadBlock Origin do not pay the bill and think that if it is sold to others in the future, the same situation may happen again, so they will never use this extension again.

Although this is true, it is a free tool after all. Everyone wants to make money. If you don’t charge users, the only way is to sell it. People who are really worried about security should choose paid tools for the safest way.
