Last year, the price of DDR5 memory was very expensive, so we did not recommend buying it at that time. However, after the end of this year, the current price of DDR5 has dropped a lot, and many people can afford it, and some are even cheaper than DDR4. At this time, you will definitely wonder, is it really worth upgrading? Is it really that much faster to buy DDR5? Recently, foreign media have actually tested a number of games, which should be able to give you a good reference. I will summarize them below.

With DDR5 memory getting cheaper, is it worth upgrading now? DDR5 vs DDR4, actual tests of multiple games will tell you

Recently, foreign media TechSpot announced the actual test report of DDR5 vs DDR4. The brands they used are all G.SKILL, namely “Ripjaws V Series 32GB DDR4-4000 CL16 (8GBx4)” and “Trident Z5 RGB Series 32GB DDR5-7200″ CL34 (16GBx2)”, the interesting thing is that the current prices of these two models are abroad, DDR4-4000 is 190 US dollars, and DDR5-7200 is 130 US dollars.

The processor equipped with the test platform is i9-14900K. Each model has three resolutions tested, 1080p, 1440 and 4K. There are 21 games in total. Here are only a few. More complete content can beClick here to jump to TechSpot article reading。

The first is “Assassin’s Creed: Phantasm”. In the resolutions of 1080p and 1440p, DDR5 has an obvious advantage, with a margin of about 10%. However, after reaching 4K, DDR5 and DDR4 are almost the same:

“Dynasty 2077: Free Fantasy” is only in 1080p resolution, DDR5 is a little bit ahead, about 8%, and 1440p and 4K are about the same:

There is no difference at all in the game “Horizon Zero Dawn”, DDR5 and DD4 perform the same in the three resolutions:

“Far Cry 6” is similar. 1080p is slightly ahead of DDR5, but the gap is very small. 1440p and 4K are the same:

Among the 21 games, “Total War: Warhammer 3” is the only game where DDR4 performs better than DDR5. This is really surprising. I didn’t expect this result. As for other games, most of them are the same as the above four. The gap will be more obvious in 1080p, while 1440p and 4K are just fine:

So overall, for games, it really doesn’t make much difference whether you choose DDR4 or DDR5. The graphics card and processor are the key points. However, DDR5 is already a trend, and DDR4 is destined to be eliminated. Therefore, for those who are building new computers, it is still recommended to choose DDR5. Moreover, memory is so cheap now, and motherboards that support DDR5 are not expensive, so it is a good time to buy one.

Currently, we are using DDR4. For those who are considering upgrading to DDR5, it depends on what your use is. If it is a game, it is not recommended because the difference will not be huge, and you may not even feel the difference at all.
