People who use computers will inevitably need to purchase some peripheral equipment from time to time to add assistance, especially mice and keyboards. This time we will focus on mice. Esports mice are like the shoes on an Olympic sprinter’s feet. Sure, there’s a slight advantage in competition, but without basic talent, practice, and skill, that advantage won’t have the same effect on your performance.
Do I really need to buy a “gaming mouse”?
What exactly is an “esports mouse”?
In recent years, many mice have been advertised with the words “e-sports” or “game”. Before discussing whether to buy one, it is necessary to first define what an e-sports mouse is. There are many different types of mice, and not all are designed for use with the same types of games. For example, MMO mice are designed with programmable buttons under the fingers. Depending on the MMO game you are playing, this type of mouse can have an impact on the convenience or comfort of the game. However, when you think of esports mice, most people think of mice that are primarily useful for fast-action games, games that rely on your reflexes and coordination to win. In games like Call of Duty or Force, aiming and shooting faster than your competitors will be crucial to your success.
E-sports mice are more sensitive than standard mice, can detect the smallest movements of the user’s hand, and usually allow you to change the weight to suit your preferences. It is like a four-wheel-drive vehicle in the mouse world. For roughly the same reasons, the mouse is drilled, increased or decreased, colored, and variously modified. The greater the modification flexibility, the higher the price.
Esports mice benefit elite gamers (but maybe not you)
With extremely high polling rates and sensitivity, you’ll need the reflexes of a fighter pilot to benefit from the performance a gaming mouse offers. If you are a serious gamer and are pushing the limits of a regular mouse, then it makes sense to go with a high-priced gaming mouse with better accuracy. However, just like buying a 300Hz gaming monitor won’t suddenly turn you into a headshot king, gaming mice may not be a meaningful experience for the vast majority of people who buy them.
Gaming mice are generally priced relatively high. If you spend a fortune on a gaming mouse and then adjust its settings to the same range as a 499 office mouse, then the only achievement you have achieved is “spending a fortune.”
Please ignore the word “esports”
That’s not to say that buying the right mouse will have a major impact on your gaming experience or how much you enjoy it. You can find many or all of these features on mice that don’t have the “gaming” label, and sometimes a cheaper gaming mouse is just as useful as a gaming mouse several times the price. If you don’t care if the mouse is labeled as a “gaming” product by the manufacturer, but just want to find the right mouse, there are some key features that may help:
- multiple buttons
Having extra buttons beyond the typical three obviously helps, as it means your hands can relax a little and just keep those fingers on the important buttons. However, too many macro buttons are inconvenient for most people. The most common ones are on the side under the thumb of the mouse. You can control the previous and next pages with just one click (or they can be customized). - Switchable DPI button
It’s helpful to have a button on the mouse that switches the sensitivity up and down. This is because you may want different levels of sensitivity for gaming (and this will vary depending on the type of game) versus working. - Good ergonomics
Given that many gamers tend to play games for long periods of time, the poor ergonomics of many esports mice are somewhat shocking. What’s the point of razor-sharp precision and responsiveness if physical fatigue outweighs the advertised advantages of these mice? Therefore, be careful in choosing a quality mouse that is ergonomically designed. - Reasonable DPI range
Gaming mice are often marketed with ridiculous numbers that far exceed 20,000 DPI. In fact, most pro players of games like Battlefield or Call of Duty use nothing more than 400 to 1,600 DPI in their games. The DPI of most normal mice is within this range, although they may not be able to switch on the fly.
Like most people, I’m a casual gamer with no ambitions of qualifying for some kind of eSports tournament, and my skills aren’t particularly great. A fancy eSports mouse isn’t going to put me in the top half of the leaderboards, and any elite gamer can beat the crap out of all of us with any old trackball mouse. For most people, it doesn’t make much sense to spend money on a high-end gaming mouse with impressive financial figures, when a much cheaper gaming mouse or even an ergonomic office mouse will bring you just as many benefits.
