Intel’s 14th generation Raptor Lake Refresh processor is only a minor update compared to the previous generation, mainly improving performance by adjusting the clock and core count. Although the performance is indeed stronger, the relative temperature and power consumption are also higher. However, I did not expect that the temperature dropped significantly after simply removing the cover of the i9-14900K processor. Recently, a foreign YouTube channel discovered this.

What a difference! YouTube’s actual measurement found that after removing the cover of the i9-14900K processor, the temperature dropped by 12 degrees

Foreign YouTube channel Der8auer will remove the cover of the CPU for testing every time a new product is released, but this time the i9-14900K processor has a rather strange phenomenon.

First, they tested the factory baseline, using the ASUS Maximus Z790 Hero motherboard, Corsair’s 360mm AIO water cooling system, fixed the fan speed and core clock, and the same DDR5-7600 XMP memory profile, with the Core Ratio set at 56 and the v-core core voltage at 1.39V:

Before removing the cover, the maximum power consumption reached 294W. After Der8auer removed it and tested again, the power consumption dropped by 10W, and the temperature also dropped from the original 93.1 degrees to 83.2 degrees, a decrease of nearly 10 degrees. Therefore, they believe that the reduction in power consumption should be due to the lower temperature:

They then used a special contact frame to ensure that the CPU package was more even and strengthened the contact with the heat sink. The results showed that the temperature was lower again, reaching 81.5 degrees, which means it was about 12 degrees less than without removal:

I didn’t expect that a cover could make such a big difference in the CPU temperature. Even so, it is not recommended for ordinary people, because the disassembly step can be said to be difficult. Even if you have the relevant tools, the warranty will definitely be void after disassembly;

The past three generations of Intel’s strongest gaming processor Der8auer have been disassembled, such as i9-12900K, i9-13900KS, and i9-14900K:

Since its launch, the i9-14900K has been considered by many media and YouTubers to have very high power consumption and its only shortcoming. Therefore, the temperature drop will be so large when it is removed this time. Therefore, if the covers of other models of CPUs are removed, the difference is likely to be smaller.

It is undeniable that even if the temperature and power consumption of i9-14900K are very high, its performance is still very good. Previously, overclockers have used this chip to set world records, such asClock overclocked to a terrifying number of 9.1GHz、Playing “CS2” (Absolute Force 2), the game ran an exaggerated frame rate of 1,310 FPS:

If you are not familiar with Intel’s 14th generation desktop processors, let me briefly talk about the differences between the previous generation and the previous generation. They are basically the same and have the same architecture, but there are some changes in the clock speed and number of cores. Among them, the upgrade of the Core i7-14700K is the most impressive. You can introduce it in more detail.Refer to this article:
