Feel more at ease when you are away from home! Gmail app provides client-side encryption capabilities for iOS and Android

Last year we started targetingDesktop-enabled Gmail end-to-end encryption, finally available on mobile devices!

According to information announced by Google on its official blog, the client-side encryption of the Gmail service has enabled users who have deeper encryption needs for sensitive information and important attached files to no longer need to take out their laptops to send and receive emails when they are out and about.

Click the “shield” icon next to the title of the message writing interface in the Gmail app for iOS and Android to activate the native built-inClient encryption capabilities(Suddenly I discovered that the previous demonstration on the desktop seemed to be next to Cc and Bcc).

This feature is expected to help so-called “highly regulated” industries such as government agencies, defense-related, aerospace or financial institutions that are more likely to deal with highly confidential information, eliminating the additional cumbersome steps to activate end-to-end encrypted external applications and services. There is also less need to worry about possible leakage of confidentiality caused by using public networks.

“連線至識別資訊提供者以進行用戶端加密
為 Google Workspace 用戶端加密 (CSE) 設定外部金鑰服務並建立與 Google Workspace 的連線後,您必須將 Google Workspace 連線至識別資訊提供者 (IdP),無論是第三方 IdP 或 Google 身分皆可。您的外部金鑰服務會使用 IdP 來驗證使用者,隨後他們才能為檔案加密或存取加密的檔案。”

Although this feature is not yet open to users other than Enterprise Plus, Education Standard, and Education Plus – it’s not surprising. After all, Workspace actually has encryption for transmission, so there is no need to mistakenly think that no client encryption means no encryption at all.

To activate this feature, the Workspace administrator will need to enable the corresponding Android and iOS mobile functions in the CSE interface. Users should then see the shield’s end-to-end encryption icon appear next to the authored document.

It should be noted that when this encryption mode is enabled, functions such as collective sending mode, signature, smart writing, translation and summary, and confidential mode will not be available. Users are also not allowed to search the body of encrypted messages. But I believe this is a necessary condition for the highest level of encryption of email messages and files.

It is rumored that Google, which has been firmly established as the default search engine in the Apple ecosystem, will face severe challenges from Apple.
