The next revolution in photographic equipment may not be a more stable gimbal or a higher-pixel sensor, but something that can run on its own. A new start-up company called Mondo Robotics recently released its first product, Beni, an all-terrain photography robot designed for dynamic shooting. It has functions such as 4K recording, automatic following, automatic editing, and body-sensing remote control. It is expected to raise funds on Kickstarter, with an early bird price of US$799 (approximately NT$26,000).

Team Background: Tesla Optimus meets DJI

The makeup of the team at Mondo Robotics is another reason why expectations are high for Beni. According to X onBreak the news, the company’s CTO was involved in the development of the Tesla Optimus humanoid robot, and the technical director was DJI’s director of infrastructure and QA. Mondo Robotics officially confirmed in its reply that its reinforcement learning (RL) motion control was initially developed based on Unitree’s open source framework untiree_rl_gym, and was subsequently iteratively optimized by itself.

This also explains why Beni has both excellent motion control capabilities (from the robot team) and solid imaging system design (from the aerial camera team). The combination of the two just hits the underdeveloped market of consumer photography robots. This combination allowed Beni to carry the dual genes of “robotics technology x aerial camera imaging” from the beginning.

Hardware specifications: 4K video recording, Wi-Fi 6, replaceable battery

Beni measures 8.5 × 7.1 × 7.1 inches (approximately 21.6 × 18 × 18 cm) and weighs 1.75 kg, which is medium-sized for a body-worn camera. The core camera supports three video recording specifications: 4K@30fps, 3K@60fps and 1080p@100fps. It has 32GB of built-in storage space and provides a microSD card slot for expansion.

In terms of connectivity, it is equipped with Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.4, ensuring low latency for instant image transmission and remote control. The battery life is about 1.5 hours, and it adopts a replaceable battery design. With the optional charging hub, it can charge two batteries and the motion sensing remote control at the same time.

All-terrain mobility: top speed 28.8 km/h, can jump 25 cm obstacles

Beni’s best feature is its mobility. It can reach a top speed of 17.9 mph (approximately 28.8 km/h) and can jump obstacles up to 10 inches (approximately 25.4 cm). The original factory provides quick-release indoor and outdoor wheel sets. The outdoor tires have deep and thick treads and are suitable for non-paved roads such as grass, gravel, and mud. The indoor wheels are quiet and compact, suitable for wooden floors or tiles.

This “one machine, two wheel sets” design is quite rare among consumer-grade photography robots, and it also allows Beni’s applicable scenarios to extend from the living room to parks, skateparks, beaches and even cross-country trails.

Core functions: automatic following, automatic editing, somatosensory remote control

Beni’s shooting modes cover a variety of scenarios from passive tracking to active control:

Auto-Follow: Through the onboard visual recognition system, Beni can lock on the target person and automatically follow the shooting, providing a variety of camera angles such as behind, side, and surround. It also has an image stabilization function to ensure a smooth effect during dynamic shooting.

Auto-Edit: After the shooting is completed, Beni can automatically pick out the best moments from the longest clip and edit it into a highlight video, which is very useful for users who don’t want to spend time in post-production.

Motion Controller: Beni comes with a special motion-sensing remote control, which can control movement, jumping, taking pictures and other actions without using a mobile phone. It is very practical for scenes such as ball games, skateboarding, and extreme sports where it is inconvenient to hold a mobile phone.

FPV exploration mode: Through Explore Mode, you can switch to Beni’s first-person perspective and instantly transfer footage to your phone, allowing users to explore the environment like operating a remote control car. For those who want to capture pets’ perspective, children’s play footage, or outdoor adventure records, this ability to “put the camera on the scene” is difficult to replace with a traditional tripod or handheld stabilizer.

Game Mode: Beni also added an interesting “tug of war” game. Two somatosensory remote controls are held at each end. Shaking is to exert force, and the robot will move towards the stronger side. The official trailer predicts that more games will be added in the future.

Personalized design: interchangeable ears, hat and five colors

Beni also worked hard on the exterior. Available in five colors: red, yellow, green, blue, and pink. The ear accessories can be replaced, and you can also wear a hat or attach stickers. It even supports 3D printing of homemade accessories. This “pet-like” design strategy is obviously to reduce the coldness of the robot and make it more like a member of the family rather than a cold equipment. This type of cute robot is indeed more likely to be loved by more groups in the consumer market.

Competitive product positioning: a new category of photography robots

There are probably not many products on the market that overlap with Beni’s functions. Most of them are action cameras or some of the functions inside them, such as the DJI Osmo Action series with tracking accessories, Insta360’s AI tracking function, and GoPro’s “automatic editing” application. However, they are essentially “fixed bodies + software tracking” and cannot actually move and shoot.

Products that can truly “run and shoot” were mostly concentrated in the professional field in the past (such as Robotcam’s sports shooting robotic arm, and the remote-controlled camera car Dolly for the film and television industry). The price often costs tens of thousands or even hundreds of thousands of dollars, which is simply unaffordable for ordinary consumers. Beni enters the consumer market for $799, and with its cute appearance, if the Kickstarter fund-raising goes smoothly in the future, it is expected to create a new category of “movable photography robots”.
