For those who are dissatisfied with the recent situation, including limiting the number of article views and messing with the payment mechanism, perhaps this service that looks very Twitter gives them a way out.
Unexpectedly, while social services continue to pursue the attention of young people, “old brands” with stable operations such as Facebook and Instagram have become another selling point?
Open the Threads app (iOS click here to download｜Android click here to download), the explanation mentions that Threads is part of the Instagram platform. In short, except that you need to log in or register an Instagram account to post a thread. Similar to many social apps (especially Twitter). Threads can start posting through the “+” at the bottom, and the function columns on the left and right are post streaming, search, favorite updates, and personal pages.
You can post a plain text message or post an image by clicking the paperclip button on the post interface. The Hashtag function is not currently supported, but previews from websites such as YouTube can be read. The word count is limited to 450 words – I tested this myself, but many people say it is 500 words (for reference, Twitter should currently be 280 words) and cannot be edited afterwards. The maximum number of stickers is ten at a time (this is the same as IG).
In addition, if you continuously enter blank lines in the posting interface, the Threads posting interface will automatically cut it into a series of threads for you. That is to say, I personally have not seen any other previous reports mentioning that Threads can actively change the relevant display status according to the location.
The setting interface allows you to choose whether Threads’ post string should be made public – but unlike Facebook, which can control the visibility of a single post, once it is closed, the account’s posts will be completely closed to only friends, which is basically similar to the privacy policy of the Instagram service.
Because of this, the author, who originally kept his personal Instagram private, would like to use Threads as a platform for public posting on his private Instagram account – I am a little curious about how people will use this service? Personally, I think that if it doesn’t develop, it would at least be good as a backup when Twitter’s service is interrupted (Isn’t this a bit treasonous? XD).
The most interesting thing found in the initial use at this stage is that pure text messages can actually be shared from the Threads app to screenshots of text to Instagram as pictures (and it looks quite trendy ~ eh), and can also be shared in the format of Stories. It feels like the hope is to draw more people into the Threads bandwagon from the Instagram experience.
In fact, from a strategic perspective, Threads’ entry point and timing are quite smart. After all, Facebook, which can already post pure text, seems to have stabilized the competition between Facebook and Twitter in the long-standing social war.
Although Twitter has indeed annoyed many users recently due to Elon Musk’s various new practices, it feels like it is very suitable to take advantage of it. But from a personal point of view, Meta should hope to use Threads to give the relatively young Instagram user group a better chance to try a text-based social experience, and maybe even fall in love with Facebook, which is more different from Twitter (I admit that I may be thinking too far in this part).
In a recent speech, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg mentioned his expectations for social applications where more than 1 billion people can communicate and talk together on this “Twitter-like” service. He pointed out that Twitter had the opportunity to achieve such a goal, but it has not been able to achieve it, and hoped that his team would be able to achieve it.
Obviously, everyone knows that it is impossible to surpass Twitter itself by relying on a “Twitter-like” experience alone (provided that it does not continue to self-destruct). Therefore, we have also noticed that Meta seems to want to use Threads to experiment with a new type of community that Facebook and Twitter may not have touched, that is, the decentralized concept of social platforms such as Mastodon.

Although the name sounds very middle-class (in fact, Metaverse is not afraid of giving in). However, its decentralization concept is very interesting. What it hopes to solve is the current very obvious example: the “Twitter Chaos” that causes users to be confused and do not know whether to continue to stay on Twitter or start a new one and apply for another account.
According to Threads’ description: “You will soon be able to track and interact with other people on Mastodon and other federated universe platforms. They will also be able to find other users on Threads using their full username (e.g. @username@threads.net).”
After supporting Fediverse where users can build their own servers, you can use a decentralized identity authentication to correspond to multiple servers (services) for cross-platform attention and sharing.
Although conceptually, it seems to be the same as applying for a social account with an Apple ID or Google account. But since it is a decentralized concept. This concept of a community that is not controlled by any entity is indeed a quite innovative development direction.
It’s hard to imagine that Meta, with such a large number of users, would want to use Threads to explore the new universe of Fediverse. But for Meta, it not only attracts people who originally mainly focused on image sharing to try it, but it is also a possible direction for them to find the next breakthrough point in social networks. Coupled with the recent incidents on Twitter, it seems that the long-standing balance has been loosened.
I believe that for Zuckerberg, there should be no better time to take action than now, right?
