After a period of rumors and leaked news, CD Projekt Red finally confirmed earlier this week that they are currently creating a new large-scale expansion content for “The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt” (Songs of the Past) that has not been in 11 years. It is expected to be launched on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S platforms in 2027, which means that it will definitely skip the old generation platform and NS version. In addition, the development team also promised to release more detailed information this summer.
Just in June 2025, Polish game industry insider Borys Nieśpielak revealed that the third large-scale expansion content of “The Witcher 3” was being planned and would be jointly created by the Fool’s Theory team. After that, other well-known tipsters such as NateTheHate also came forward to echo the rumors, and in December 2025, market analyst Mateusz Chrzanowski also came out to suggest that the next paid DLC for “The Witcher 3” would be launched in May 2026. Although this did not happen, CDPR did disclose the existence of this DLC at this time.
According to CDPR officials, they originally planned to reveal to fans the news that the “Old Times” DLC was under development at the “Witcher 3: Blood and Wine” anniversary event live broadcast this week. Unexpectedly, the news was exposed in advance on the official RED Launcher, causing them to have to disclose it directly on the social platform in advance. Even though it has been confirmed, CDPR still maintains confidentiality regarding the content of this new DLC, only confirming that players will once again play as “Geralt of Rivia”, and the development team behind it is indeed the rumored Fool’s Theory.
Fool’s Theory is an independent studio founded by several former CDPR developers in 2015. In 2017, it launched its first new original IP called “Seven: The Days Long Gone”. This open-world stealth RPG subsequently received mostly positive reviews on the Steam platform. In 2024, Fool’s Theory also launched another new game, “The Thaumaturge”. Even though it’s independent, the studio still maintains a close working relationship with CDPR.
In addition to the new expansion for The Witcher 3: Old Times, Fool’s Theory is currently developing a complete remaster of the original Witcher. The development plan was initially announced in October 2022, but has fallen silent since then, and the actual launch time is still unknown. As for “The Witcher 4” developed by the CDPR team, many details have not yet been disclosed.
On the other hand, CDPR also reminded players in the relevant social posts to reveal “The Witcher 3: Song of Old Times” that they have made a wave of updates to the PC minimum configuration information for “The Witcher 3”, saying that this is to ensure the smoothness and compatibility of future updates.
