MediaTek quietly releases Dimensity 8550 processor: allowing mid-range machines to run Gemini Nano v3, Gemini Intelligence is no longer a flagship patent

Google announced Gemini Intelligence at the I/O conference earlier this month, which it claims is the most “agent-like” AI function on the Android platform. Because it is equipped with the Gemini Nano v3 AI model, it can complete multi-step tasks through device-side computing without being connected to the Internet. However, the system requirements set by Google are extremely strict, requiring Android 17 operating system, more than 12GB of RAM, support for AI Core and Gemini Nano v3 or higher, and at least 5 years of Android OS update guarantee. Even Google’s own Pixel 9 series and Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 may be excluded.

While most consumers were lamenting, MediaTek quietly released the Dimensity 8550 processor. The specifications of this chip are almost identical to the previous Dimensity 8500. The only difference is the addition of the LLM Booster module and support for the Google Gemini Nano v3 AI model. To put it simply, mid-range mobile phones equipped with this chip theoretically have the hardware conditions to run Gemini Intelligence. This is a glimmer of hope for consumers who don’t want to spend a lot of money on flagship phones.

Dimensity 8550 Specifications: The “AI version” of the Dimensity 8500 chip

In terms of hardware specifications, there are almost no differences between the Dimensity 8550 and the 8500. Both use TSMC’s 4nm (N4P) process. The CPU architecture is an eight-core all-large-core design (Cortex-A725), and the GPU is Mali-G720 MP8. The only substantial upgrade of the 8550 is the new LLM Booster module. This hardware accelerator is specially used to improve the inference efficiency of large language models on the device side. It also adds support for Gemini Nano v3 at the firmware level.

Gemini Intelligence’s high threshold: even flagship phones may not meet the standard

Gemini Intelligence is a new generation of AI functionality launched by Google after the 2026 I/O conference. It focuses on the “agent” experience of completing multi-step tasks on the device. Unlike Gemini, which required an Internet connection in the past, the Intelligence version emphasizes offline computing capabilities and can control phone functions without sending data out of the device to complete complex tasks such as making restaurant reservations, organizing photos, and composing messages.

But the hardware threshold set by Google is extremely strict. Minimum requirements identified so far include:

  • operating system:Android 17
  • memory: 12GB or above RAM
  • AI module: Supports AI Core and Gemini Nano v3 or higher
  • Update guarantee: At least 5 years of Android OS updates

The list of currently confirmed supported models is quite limited, including the Google Pixel 10 series, Samsung Galaxy S26 series, OnePlus 15 and 15R, Motorola Signature, Honor Magic 8 Pro and other flagship phones released in 2026. Even Google’s own Pixel 9 Pro from last year is unusable due to possible lack of Gemini Nano v3 support, and the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 is also at risk of insufficient RAM.

This means that the vast majority of consumers who buy mobile phones before 2026 will not be able to enjoy the functions of Gemini Intelligence unless they are willing to change their phones for AI functions. For users who don’t want to change phones frequently, this is tantamount to being excluded from Google’s latest AI ecosystem.

AI breakthrough for mid-range mobile phones: MediaTek vs Qualcomm

The emergence of Dimensity 8550 opens the door to Gemini Intelligence for the mid-range mobile phone market. If mobile phone manufacturers adopt this chip and pair it with 12GB RAM and Android 17, they can theoretically provide Gemini Intelligence functions in the mid-range price range. This is of great significance to consumers, because currently Gemini Intelligence is almost synonymous with “flagship exclusive”.

However, chip support is only the first step. Mobile phone manufacturers also need to ensure that the device meets all Gemini Intelligence software and hardware conditions, including Android 17 version, 12GB RAM configuration, and more than 5 years of update commitment. Judging from the current 8GB RAM configuration common in mid-range mobile phones, manufacturers must be willing to increase the memory configuration on mid-range products in order to truly reach the threshold of Gemini Intelligence. In addition, how the actual experience of Gemini Intelligence is presented on mid-range chips, and how far the computing speed is compared with flagship machines, these are issues that consumers will ultimately care about. Judging from past experience, mid-range chips may only have 60% to 80% of the AI inference speed of flagships, but it is more than enough for general daily use scenarios, at least it is a breakthrough from scratch.

For consumers, it means that they can experience Google’s latest AI features without paying flagship prices. For mobile phone manufacturers, this provides an opportunity to differentiate in the mid-range product line. In the past, the selling points of mid-range mobile phones were nothing more than large screens, large batteries, and sufficient performance. Now, “support for Gemini Intelligence” will become a new marketing weapon. As for the entire Android ecosystem, when AI functions are no longer monopolized by high-priced flagships, the value positioning of mid-range mobile phones will also be redefined. Next, it depends on how Qualcomm will take over.
