Although the Radeon RX 7900 XTX is AMD’s latest generation flagship graphics card, its performance is still lagging behind the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090. Therefore, for players who want the strongest display performance currently, the RTX 4090 must undoubtedly be the first choice. However, if you are willing to pay higher power consumption, the performance of RX 7900 XTX can catch up with RTX 4090. Recently, some foreign netizens have successfully tested it.
After foreign players tuned the RX 7900 XTX, the performance successfully caught up with the RTX 4090, but the power consumption was as high as 700W.
Recently on the Reddit forum, a Jedi95 overclocking player shared that he set the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX to run without power restrictions and successfully ran a clock speed of 3.33GHz. The performance score is similar to the RTX 4090, which is quite impressive.
According to the instructions, he put an AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX into an Elmor Labs EVC2SE and some DIY mods to relieve power constraints, paired with an EK Quantum Vector water-cooled custom loop cooling solution, which was connected to a 10-degree water cooler:
He then used software to adjust the power consumption and current configuration of the graphics card, and successfully reached an average clock speed of 3,333 MHz in 3DMark Time Spy, and the highest clock speed reached 3,467 MHz in the same test.
For reference, the default clock of the RX 7900 XTX is 2,300MHz, and the overclocked clock is 2,500MHz, which is a huge difference.
In terms of performance scores, it scored 36,971 points in 3DMark’s Time Spy, 18,335 points in Time Spy Extreme, 20,492 points in Port Royal, and 7,690 points in Speed Way. These are all very close to the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090:
Since the clock speed is so high, it is not surprising that the power consumption is also super high, reaching 696W, which is faster than 700W. This is almost twice the default TBP of 355W, which is really exaggerated. However, this should only be used for running scores. If the power consumption is so high for a long time, it should be quite dangerous, and it is not good for the graphics card itself:
It is worth noting that even though the RX 7900 XTX clock speed is significantly improved compared to the default, it strictly speaking does not surpass the RTX 4090 graphics card, and this is only compared to the default RTX 4090. According to tests by other players, as long as the RTX 4090 is slightly overclocked, the 3DMark running score can be greatly improved, and the power consumption is only between 400~500W.
However, it is not fair to compare these two. After all, the commercial price of RX 7900 XTX is almost half of that of RTX 4090, so it depends on your budget. If the performance exceeds the budget, of course, choose the RTX 4090. If the budget is limited, the RX 7900 XTX is not bad, and you can release more performance through overclocking.
