Although implementing the integration requires some adjustments to Veo 3’s output, it seems like a perfect match. As the name suggests, YouTube Shorts is suited for short-form video content; the format originally launched with a 30-second limit but was later increased to 60 seconds. Due to the digital costs of generative AI, each generated Veo clip is quite short—only 8 seconds in the current version of the tool—but by stringing them together, you can get a YouTube Short.
Since Google launched Veo 3 at I/O last month, its appearance on the internet was inevitable. The updated AI model generates video and audio from simple text prompts with astonishing realism. In some cases, the results are so good that they can be fairly easily mistaken for real non-AI videos, which is a bit unsettling. While you can now add Veo 3 videos (or any other videos) to YouTube Shorts, they are not suited for the vertical format. Veo 3 outputs 720p landscape video, which means Shorts will have black bars at the top and bottom. It is speculated that Google will create a custom version of the model for YouTube to generate vertical video clips.
Mohan didn’t mention the pricing model, but Veo 3 might not be cheap for Shorts creators. Right now, you have to pay a subscription fee to use Veo 3, but it still caps you at 125 eight-second videos per month.
