Not only does generative AI have to look good to other opponents. Seeing Apple CarPlay brings a usage experience across the central control entertainment screen, even driving instruments and other screens. Google’s Android Auto / Automotive OS doesn’t intend to be left behind either. This Google I/O developer conference also brought related improvements to the corresponding vehicle system. First of all, it is possible to escape from the large central screen and extend to the instrument panel in front of the driver’s seat to provide a more intuitive and easy-to-read navigation and other user experiences. Multi-screen use, as well as support for corresponding vehicle sensors and information, are also confirmed to be available in Android Automotive OS 14.

This multi-screen support not only provides a better driving experience (oh, by the way, Waze is also officially built into the in-car Google Play). If the co-pilot passenger also has a screen device, the new version of Google Automotive OS can also provide a management interface for controlling multi-screen playback content. Allowing you to easily respond to passengers’ needs for watching videos or playing games.

The Android Auto in-car system has developed all the way to Automotive OS, and the original intention of the Google development team is still to assist driving. With the advancement of vehicle systems, Google has gradually opened up the video and game App application types mentioned earlier in such systems – of course, front-seat driving can only be used when the vehicle is stopped. In this wave of announcements, YouTube has also been added to the list of video application support available to OEMs.

In addition, not only the account login collaboration of Cars with Google built-in can achieve a more convenient in-car system experience. Google has also added support for IoT and weather applications – both are good application directions. After all, you should be very concerned about the weather when driving. You can also operate IoT devices before getting home – although it feels more intuitive and safer to activate the set “daily schedule” through the Google Assistant voice assistant?

Regarding video conferencing support, Google also took this opportunity to announce that Microsoft Teams, WebEx and Zoom are all ready to bring conference “voice” support on Android Auto / Automotive OS to users. It means that foreign media also pointed out that for some reason Google Meet did not appear in it. Personally, I feel that maybe the video playback and browser functions are not the first wave of this company? Maybe Google has different strategic directions for vehicle platforms.

Oh, by the way, it can be observed from this Google I/O that starting from Android 12 L, Google has been working very hard to develop a large-screen ecosystem including tablets and other devices. Although it feels like it is prepared for the Pixel Fold folding machine, in fact, the related announcement of Android Auto / Automotive OS was also mentioned this time. For multimedia applications, you can now use this wave of large-screen development experience to achieve a better process of porting to in-vehicle systems.

I believe this is also the result of Google’s series of efforts, and it will also make developers more willing to bring apps to vehicles to provide more diverse user experiences.
