NotebookLM It might be one of Google’s smart tools that almost no one has used. It made waves because of its audio overview feature. Unlike traditional search, NotebookLM doesn’t dump all the information on you at once. Instead, it turns your source materials into a podcast-style summary that sounds like real people talking, not a robot reading a script. Following the Gemini app, Google is now testing bringing this feature into Google Search.

Once enabled, you’ll see a Voice Overview button appear during your searches. Clicking it reveals a clean, simple little audio player with controls for play/pause, volume, and speed.
Google says the option to generate an audio overview doesn’t always appear—it depends on whether the system determines your search warrants it. But oddly enough, the button is tucked away in an easy-to-miss spot, showing up in the lower half of the search results page, buried beneath AI Overviews, ads, a heap of links, and even full “People also search for” sections, so don’t expect to see it mid-page or higher up. According to Google’s blog post, generating an audio overview can take around 40 seconds because it simultaneously extracts information, constructs the audio, and organizes all the content together. If your search is highly niche or more complex, expect it to take even longer.
Much like the NotebookLM feature seen in Gemini, this version introduces a pair of AI-generated “hosts” who explain your topic through a lively conversation. For those who like to double-check details, Google adds extra transparency by placing direct links to the sources used below the audio player.
Through this experiment, Google is pushing Google Search toward a voice-first, semi-hands-free future. More importantly, this new experiment is a major improvement for people with visual impairments. However, for now, it can only be seen as a cool extra feature, not a shortcut to skip the full process. Until Google confirms its accuracy, the Google Search voice overview feature is more like a carefully edited movie trailer, still a long way from the actual film.
