How much memory should be used to build a game console has always been an issue that many people pay attention to. New games are launched every year, which means that 8GB of memory may be enough at this time, but it will not be enough after a few years. A while ago, a foreign channel tested the difference in game performance between 8GB, 16GB, 32GB and 64GB RAM, and also selected a number of new games launched in 2023. If you are worried about this, the data compiled below should give you a good reference.

2023 How much memory is needed to play games? Measured FPS performance of 10 games with 8GB, 16GB, 32GB and 64GB RAM

A while ago, the foreign YouTube channel Hardware for Gamers shared a “test video on how much RAM you need in 2023”, using 4 RAM memory specifications, namely 8GB, 16GB, 32GB and 64GB. A total of 10 games were tested, and the image quality was all set at 1440p. It is worth noting that the graphics card of the test platform is AMD Radeon RX 6900XT, the most powerful graphics card of the previous generation of AMD. It can be clearly seen from the data below that having a powerful enough graphics card is actually more important than large memory. If your computer is only for playing games, it is quite worthwhile to spend the money invested in RAM on the graphics card.

test platform

  • CPU:AMD Ryzen 9 5900X
  • Graphics card: RX 6900XT 16GB
  • Hard drive: Samsung SSD 970 Evo
  • Motherboard: MSI X570 A Pro Gaming
  • Power supply: Gigabyte P850GM 850W

Among the 10 games tested, the ones released in 2023 include “Evil Castle 4 Remastered”, “Dark Son”, “Hogwarts Legacy”, “Atomic Heart”, “Death Remake”, “Wild Heart” and “The Cursed Land”. There are also several well-known games, such as: “Fortress Heroes”, “Decisive Hour: Modern Warfare 2” and “Cyberpunk” 2077》.

The first is “Castle of Evil 4 Remastered”. It can be seen that there is no impact on the 16GB and above. Only the average FPS of 8GB is reduced by about 9%:

The same goes for “Dark Son”. Only 8GB has a lower average FPS, 7% less:

“Hogwarts Legacy” is different. The average FPS of 8GB and 16GB is lower than that of 32GB and 64GB, which means that if you want to get the best performance when playing this game, you must choose 32GB:

The gap in “Atomic Heart” is even smaller, with 8GB only about 3% less. Basically, it can be seen that the performance of games with four RAM specifications is the same:

For “Fortress Heroes”, the performance of 32GB and 64GB is the same, the average FPS of 16GB will be 5% lower, and the average FPS of 8GB will be -11%:

Although the average FPS of 16GB of “Death of Another Dimension: Remastered” is occasionally lower than that of 32GB and 64GB, the difference is only one centimeter, and the 8GB is more obvious, with a 9% decrease:

“Wild Heart” is no different, the average FPS performance of the four memory specifications is the same:

“Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2” obviously has a big difference between 8GB and others, reaching -16%. Those who want to play this game remember to choose 16GB or more:

16GB of RAM is enough for “Haunted Lands”:

Finally, there is “Cyberpunk 2077”. The four memory specifications are similar:

Overall, in 2023, if the graphics card used is of a high enough level, 16GB of RAM can basically satisfy most games, but if you want to pave the way for the future, it is safer to upgrade to 32GB.
