After a series of beta tests, iOS 16.4, which has evolved to bring many new features, today released an RC version that is very close to the official version. Although from the description of iOS 16.4, it seems that only new emoticons have been added this time, which feels a bit ordinary (up to 21! Isn’t this exciting~eh). iOS 16.4 is here! More than 6 thoughtful new features are coming (Is it time to upgrade? Check here!)

After a series of beta tests, iOS 16.4 / iPadOS 16.4, which has evolved to bring many new features, today released an RC version that is very close to the official version. Although from the description of iOS 16.4, it seems that this time only the new emoticons are a bit ordinary (as many as 21! Isn’t this exciting~eh). But this update actually contains a number of interesting new features.

Since the new generation of iOS/iPadOS wants to join the Public Beta test, it has been simplified to the point where you only need to go to “Settings > General > Software Update” and select “Beta Update Project” to activate the iOS Public Beta permissions. So basically for most people, it’s not too difficult to play.

Before getting into the key points of the new features of iOS 16.4, I believe everyone would like to know what is going on with this update. As far as the author’s impression after the quick update is concerned, I haven’t encountered any update problems – in fact, it has been relatively stable since this wave of test versions. However, it is still recommended to do all the backups that need to be done first, just in case you need to temporarily return to the previous version.

Okay, here’s a summary of our new features in iOS 16.4 this time.

Mobile call voice isolation (Voice Isolation)

First of all, for mobile calls, iPhone users will have access to the background noise removal function that was previously available in application call functions such as FaceTime and WhatApp. In short, it is a call effect enhancement function that highlights the other party’s voice. For the FaceTime feature demo, Voice Isolation will be selectable through the extended call interface. However, when I tested the call interface after the iOS 16.4 update, I haven’t found it yet (maybe it is enabled by default?).

(Possibly a little annoying) Web notification push

Friends who are using desktop browsers should be familiar with this. Basically it will ask you if you want to get push notifications from the website. This feature is already on the verge of being outlawed as a bit annoying in the desktop version (see more:Chrome will offer recurring auto-cancel options for website notifications), and now it is on the Safari mobile browser in iOS 16.4 RC.

Although the function description is literal, it should be added to the home screen to become a website with Web apps in order to obtain such a Web Push notification function. However, after the author actually joined the desktop, I haven’t seen several websites asking me for permissions. Or is it just that they haven’t notified me yet?

Photo “duplicate” detection extends to iCloud shared photo libraries

The duplicate item sorting function can actively help compare and detect duplicate photo items. This update also extends support to iCloud shared photo libraries. This allows you to free up more unnecessary wasted storage space even in the cloud.

Dim flashing lights

For those who are worried that children (or themselves) may encounter flickering, stroboscopic and other effects in video content too frequently, which may cause eye or even physical discomfort – especially when watching in a darker environment. This time, iOS 16.4 has introduced a “dimming flashing light” function that will automatically dim the brightness when such a function is detected. You can find this thoughtful feature in “Settings > Accessibility > Dynamic Effects > Dim Flickering Lights”.

Optimized car accident detection

I believe almost everyone has heard of the news that car accident detection was not used as a backup, but often resulted in “false alarms” in the early stages of its launch, causing a burden on police units. This time iOS 16.4 specifically lists another correction to this feature. I believe that if the effect is good, you will see it less frequently in the future.News about complaints from relevant units – I hope!

Regarding whether the current warranty of an Apple device has expired, you can directly find the warranty information of all devices under the Apple ID account in “Settings > About This Mac > Warranty Scope” – this is quite convenient!

Other functional evolutions and modifications

In addition to the 21 new emojis mentioned earlier, this iOS 16.4 update also includes support for the VoiceOver voice function on the map of the Weather App. In response to the embarrassing crash situation, there will now be a new reporting mechanism; the personalized spatial audio settings of AirPods have also been additionally integrated into “Settings > Tactile and Sound Feedback” – that is to say, the easiest way is to put on the headphones, and at the top of the settings it is easy to see options for integrating almost all AirPods functions.

In addition, this update also fixes an issue where the Parental Controls feature may experience missing Ask to Buy functionality and an issue where Matter-compatible thermostats may become unresponsive. This update is said to also include iOS 15.7.4 for iOS 15 users, but this should be mainly to fix bugs.

For detailed iOS 16.4 update projects, please refer to the original list below:

  • 21 new emoji including animals, hand gestures, and objects are now available in emoji keyboard
  • Notifications for web apps added to the Home Screen
  • Voice Isolation for cellular calls prioritizes your voice and blocks out ambient noise around you
  • Duplicates album in Photos expands support to detect duplicate photos and videos in an iCloud Shared Photo Library
  • VoiceOver support for maps in the Weather app
  • Accessibility setting to automatically dim video when flashes of light or strobe effects are detected
  • Fixes an issue where Ask to Buy requests from children may fail to appear on the parent’s device
  • Addresses issues where Matter-compatible thermostats could become unresponsive when paired to Apple Home
  • Crash Detection optimizations on iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro models
