A few days ago, when China’s Moore Threads released its new MTT S80 graphics card, its floating point computing power is as high as 14.4 TFLOPS, which is almost the same as the RTX 3060. Therefore, many people at the time expected that this card would also provide similar performance, right? There has been a lot of discussion, and some media in China finally published a relevant evaluation report earlier. Unfortunately, I don’t know whether it is because there are still many places that have not been optimized, or for other reasons. According to actual measurements, the performance is only about the same as GTX 1060, and the standby power consumption is quite scary.

China’s Moore Thread MTT S80 graphics card has been tested, and its standby power consumption exceeds 100, and its performance is only about the same as GTX 1060

The MTT S80 launched by China Moore Thread is the world’s first graphics card with PCIe 5 interface, equipped with 4,096 stream processors, 128 Tensor cores, and 256 texture units, with a clock speed of 1.80GHz. It is also equipped with 16GB of GDDR6 memory, with a transfer rate of 14 GT/s, using a 256-bit interface, and a maximum bandwidth of 448GB/s. Overall, the specifications are okay.

Earlier it seemed that the performance ban should be lifted. Many Chinese media released evaluation reports of MTT S80. However, there is one thing that is quite special. Foreign media VideoCardz found that several of them used the same test software and even the order was almost the same. Therefore, it was speculated that they might have followed the official test guidelines. In any case, the test results are not as good as expected. Below we will capture the test results of Expreview.

This is the test platform, with Intel Core i7-12700K and ASUS TUF GAMING B660M-PLUS D4 motherboard:

Although MTT S80 supports DirectX9 and DirectX11 APIs, the software is still under development and does not yet fully support DX11, so the common general testing process cannot be performed on this card.

For example, the 3DMark version, Expreview uses 3DMark 06 from decades ago. This version is compatible with DirectX9. In texture filling, the MTT S80 is much higher than the RTX 3060, but this is just for this test. Others are quite different:

The 3DMark06 general test is much lower. The RTX 3060 is 2.6 times that of the MTT S80:

The gap in Unigine Valley 1.0 is even bigger, especially at 4K resolution. The performance of RTX 3060 is more than 3 times ahead, and 4K DX9 is 7.5 times ahead:

The following are the games currently supported by this graphics card. There are not many games that can be run, only more than 60, and they are not fully compatible. Currently, only 13 games are fully compatible:

League of Legends can provide an average of around 149 FPS at 1080p, and 128 FPS at 4K quality:

CSGO also achieved an average FPS of 182 at 1080p settings, and 165 FPS at 4K resolution:

They also tested “Final Fantasy XIV”. This game is not fully compatible, but it can already run. The results are quite miserable. Although both DX9 and DX11 modes can be run, there are texture errors and color calculation errors. The picture is very strange. The average FPS in 1080p is only 47.2, and the 4K is 43.1 FPS:

So overall, if you want to use this card to play games at this stage, it should be very miserable, unless you want to play games that have been officially advertised as fully compatible. In performance testing, the current performance of the MTT S80 is probably similar to the GeForce RTX 1060 6GB, GTX 970 or Radeon RX 480.

Another point worth noting is that the standby power consumption of the MTT S80 is as high as 114.6W, which seems to have some problems. Expreview said that the temperature under load does not exceed 57 degrees, so it is unlikely to be so high:

For reference, the standby power consumption of RTX 4080 is only 13W, and the Intel Arc A series is about 40W.
