Foreign filmmakers spent just $250 and 9 hours completing an AI remake of a Ghibli-style “The Lord of the Rings” trailer.
Overseas AI filmmaker @PJaccetturo shared a video captioned “What if Studio Ghibli directed The Lord of the Rings?” @PJaccetturo said he spent $250 in Kling credits plus 9 hours re-editing the trailer for The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. @PJaccetturo said he captured a total of 102 frames from The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring trailer, then used OpenAI’s video generation tool Sora to recreate them in Studio Ghibli’s style while preserving the visual details, composition, color, and atmosphere of each frame.
After all the shots are converted to the Ghibli style, Kling and Luma are used to add lip-sync movements to these images, using prompts such as “a man yelling, terrified” and “a woman speaking, concerned, furrowing her brows” to add emotion to the characters and make their lip movements match the dialogue more closely.
I didn’t have the time to lip sync them, so in Kling and Luma I just used prompts like:
“a man yells, fearful”

Actually, @PJaccetturo had previously tried using AI to remake Studio Ghibli films. Last October, he used AI to re-edit the trailer for Princess Mononoke into a live-action version. However, at the time, many people seemed unhappy with @PJaccetturo using AI to adapt Studio Ghibli movies, and some even sent him death threats. In terms of production cost, speed, and the final result, it’s actually quite impressive. But setting those aside? Eight years ago, Hayao Miyazaki had a discussion with a company that used AI to assist in creating CG animation movements. The CG animation company showed Miyazaki a clip of a headless zombie moving using its body and feet. The company said AI could produce movements beyond human imagination, with an extremely uncanny feel. But Miyazaki replied, “The people who made this have no consideration for the pain of it. I don’t want AI technology to be connected to my work. This is an insult to life itself.”
And now many people are using AI to generate “Ghibli-style” images, and while everyone is doing this because they love the Ghibli style but can’t draw it themselves, so they turn to AI for help. This behavior is still being condemned by many artists, who believe it shows considerable disrespect toward the artists’ copyright. Many Hayao Miyazaki fans have also expressed dissatisfaction, saying that although AI can generate the Ghibli art style, Miyazaki’s ideas and expressiveness when it comes to storytelling are something AI can never achieve. Currently, ChatGPT has already banned free users from generating Ghibli-style images on the grounds of violating content policy, but paid members can still generate them. If the controversy continues to escalate, who knows whether even paid members will eventually be unable to use 4o Image Generation to create Ghibli-style images.
