Browser manufacturers jointly send a letter to Microsoft saying they are fed up with the way Edge is promoted

In recent years, Microsoft has adopted a series of controversial strategies to promote the adoption of the Edge browser, including attracting users with rewards, testing a behavioral model that allows Edge to automatically start every time the computer is turned on, and even being pressured by OEM manufacturers to pre-install and prioritize Edge on Windows devices. These practices not only offend many users, but also arouse strong dissatisfaction from the Browser Choice Alliance (BCA). Today, BCA has officially sent a letter to Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella to publicly express its protest against Microsoft’s actions.

Browser manufacturers jointly send a letter to Microsoft saying they are fed up with the way Edge is promoted

BCA may not be familiar to the average user. This alliance consists of several browser developers, including Google Chrome, Midori, Opera, Vivaldi, BrowserWorks and Wavebox. The alliance clearly stated in the open letter that “enough is enough” and emphasized that Windows users should have real choices instead of being forced to accept Microsoft’s default browser ecosystem. The letter accuses Microsoft of using its dominant position in the PC market to use various means to make it difficult for users to leave Edge, even if they have clearly chosen another browser.

BCA pointed out that Microsoft’s strategy is not a single incident, but a systematic reduction of users’ freedom of choice. For example, setting the default browser on different devices has become unnecessarily complicated; when searching for other browsers, Windows will pop up banner ads promoting Edge; and even after system updates, some users’ default browser will be forced to change back to Edge. These behaviors make it more difficult for users to maintain a consistent experience across platforms in an era when AI and multi-device usage are becoming more common, and also make other browser manufacturers feel that the competitive environment is unfair.

BCA believes that real competition should be based on the quality and innovation of the product itself, rather than relying on the advantages of the operating system level. Only by allowing users to choose freely can the browser market maintain healthy competition and diversity. Therefore, the BCA made a number of requests in the letter, hoping that Microsoft could adjust its strategy and establish a fairer market environment. Specifically include:

  • Allow browser vendors to compete fairly with PC manufacturers on pre-installed and default agreements, rather than being exclusive to Microsoft.
  • Stop serving misleading or obstructive ads to users who download or use other browsers.
  • Restore the past mechanism of “one-click” switching of the default browser, covering all related file types and applications (such as PDF).
  • All system-level web links should open in the user’s chosen default browser, rather than being forced to Edge.
  • Remove the Edge promotional banner that appears when searching for other browsers in Windows.
  • Stop using system updates to reset users’ default browser to Edge.
  • Unblock third-party browsers on S Mode devices.

Despite the BCA’s public pressure, it’s unclear whether Microsoft will adjust its strategy as a result. Microsoft has repeatedly emphasized its support for open competition in the past, but its actual behavior has repeatedly raised questions from the outside world. It remains to be seen whether this open letter will prompt Microsoft to re-examine its browser strategy and whether it will bring about specific changes. Perhaps in the next few months, we will see Microsoft’s next move and judge whether this dispute over browser choice will usher in a new turn.
