Tom’s Hardware said that if you use a computer with only 8GB now, it is far from enough. They use the Windows 10 operating system, and just opening 8 browser branches, Slack and Spotify, the memory usage has exceeded 8GB. In general, normal use, with four tab groups of web page paging open, has already consumed about 15GB of memory. This has not yet opened any games or applications required for work. Even if only the background service is running, the memory usage reaches 5.5GB:
Even just watching the game, the well-known masterpiece “Elden’s Ring” has already occupied 4.4GB of RAM when it is opened. Steam itself will also use 354MB of RAM. When the system detects that the memory usage exceeds the computer itself, it will make some adjustments, thereby affecting the overall performance. Tom’s Hardware also pointed out that although upgrading memory from 8GB to 16GB is not very expensive now, the interesting thing is that many brands of computers still use 8GB as a standard configuration, and they are not Chromebooks or computers from a few years ago, but gaming laptops that cost as much as $900 or $1,300. For example, the Dell XPS 13 high-end laptop costs $1,249 but only has 8GB of memory. The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon (Gen 10) also costs $1,319 for the 8GB memory version.

Therefore, for those who are interested in buying a laptop or buying a PC brand computer, if the model you choose only has 8GB RAM, it is highly recommended to spend some money to upgrade to 16GB RAM. If you don’t have the budget, you must ensure that the computer can upgrade the memory by itself in the future. Otherwise, after buying it, if you open more software and web pages, you may feel that the speed is a bit slow, and the user experience will not be very good.
Some may ask, is the same true for Mac? It’s not the same. For most users, 8GB of Mac is enough. On the one hand, the macOS operating system does not take up too much memory and is more intelligent in deployment. On the other hand, the processor has directly integrated memory, so it is faster. Tom’s Hardware also hopes that well-known companies like MSI can change 16GB RAM to standard configuration. It doesn’t matter if the price increases a little. Consumers should also use 16GB as the minimum standard.
