Google Search is a helpful tool in everyone’s daily life, and over time it has introduced more diverse ways to search. Now, Google is testing “AI Mode” — what can it do for you? You can ask the search engine more complex questions, and AI-generated responses will compile well-organized answers to your queries, with full-page replies giving you clearer answers.
Google Search begins testing “AI Mode,” aiming to become a more nuanced assistant.
Google found that more advanced users want AI responses applied to more types of searches, and would add “AI Mode” after their search terms. So Google added AI Mode to its search service. Compared with the popular AI Overviews, it offers more advanced reasoning, thinking, and multimodal capabilities. In addition to getting answers directly, AI Mode also lets users ask more nuanced follow-up questions, where in the past you might have needed multiple searches to find the answer.
On computers and mobile devices, you can search for keywords in Google as usual, then click the new “AI Mode” button next to the filters (that row of buttons like All, Images…). There’s also a “Deep” shortcut at the bottom of AI Overviews, while the dedicated AI Mode entry point lets you skip the usual search results and interact only with the latest experience. Your query will be listed at the top, with the generated results shown further down the page. You’ll see a chat-style “Ask a follow up…” instead of a search bar at the top. On mobile, you can also upload images within AI Mode, but for now it’s text-only input, and the timeline history lets you view past searches.
AI Mode is powered by a customized version of Gemini 2.0, providing access to real-time resources and information about the real world, such as knowledge graph and shopping graph details for billions of products. Google runs multiple related searches simultaneously and consolidates the results. This technology searches for information across sub-topics and multiple data sources before merging. The model learns how to verify and substantiate the content it presents, answering in a factual, objective manner without personality or an opinionated style. If there is insufficient information, users are directed to web results.
In the final example, you can also see AI Mode identifying the differences in sleep tracking features among smart rings, smart watches, and tracking pads. The answer is presented as a comparison table (not yet live, but will be rolled out later), and you can also follow up with deeper questions at any time, such as “What happens to heart rate during deep sleep?” and so on.
