In addition to supporting the “Dynamic Island” function, the iPhone 14 Pro series also adds “Always On Display (AOD)” function support to the iPhone for the first time. This feature is not only exclusive to the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. According to recent news, this feature will only be exclusive to the high-end Pro series in the iPhone 15 series next year.
Generally speaking, the default “always on display” function will turn to a darker tone when the screen enters the sleep state, allowing users to check the date, time, weather, push notifications and other content at any time.

For situations where the user places the iPhone 14 Pro series in a pocket with the screen facing down on the desktop, this feature will also be automatically turned off to save power.

However, in fact, Apple also provides a “black and white” permanent display method for this “Always Display” that many people may not know. Before introducing how to operate it, I will show you the effect of the default always display when the screen is asleep. At this point, you can see that although the screen has turned dark, you can still clearly see the tablecloth and low-saturation colors locked on the main screen.
However, if you turn on the “black and white permanent display” that I will introduce today, when the permanent display of iPhone 14 Pro or iPhone 14 Pro Max enters the screen sleep state, the lock screen will change like this. You can observe that the main screen becomes almost pure black, with only important text information such as date, time, weather and mode retained.
How to turn on the “black and white” permanent display function?
In fact, this “Always display black and white effect” function is designed for the “Do Not Disturb Mode” where users need to focus. In order to allow users to focus on what they are doing without being disturbed as much as possible, the locked screen will be in a purer black and white tone. So how do you enable this hidden feature? First, go to the system “Settings” to find “Focus Mode”, then click “Do Not Disturb Mode” to proceed to the next step.
Click “Options” to enter “Do Not Disturb Mode”, and you will see a “Dim Lock Screen” to turn it on. When the lock screen function is turned on, turning on Do Not Disturb mode in focus mode will dim the lock screen to achieve the black and white permanent display effect introduced this time.
Let’s compare again the effect of the iOS system’s default “Always Display” on screen dimming. You can see that the outline of the tablecloth is still discernible.
However, when the hidden settings for this sharing are turned on, and Do Not Disturb mode is enabled to dim the screen, it will look like this. This is also similar to the AOD display (Always On Display) effect that we commonly saw on Android phones in the past.
