Google’s AI bot Gemini can rival OpenAI’s ChatGPT, but it’s not as simple as just making queries in a chat. Google offers several different models to choose from, and you can use advanced models even without paying for a subscription. Among them, Flash strikes a balance between Pro’s performance and Nano’s lightweight design, and it was just updated.
Google Gmini 2.0 Flash is now officially available to the public.
Google positions Flash as a Gemini model that can be relied on for everyday tasks, such as gradually taking over the role of voice assistants at this stage. The company says you can now use Gemini 2.0 Flash to have AI conversations in the Gemini app on Android. The new model replaces Gemini 1.5. Analyst @MaxWeinbach posted on X noting that its performance is significantly better than OpenAI’s GPT-4o and Claude 3.6 Sonnet.

Flash 2.0 is an experimental version, first released in December 2024, but it is now stable, so all users can use it. However, if you are a Gemini Advanced subscriber, you can switch among the following AI models to handle your queries:
- Flash 2.0
- Flash 1.5
- Pro 1.5
- Pro 1.5 with Deep Research
- Experimental Advanced 2.0
The old Gemini Flash 1.5 will still be available for a few more weeks, so users who have interacted with it can continue finishing their work before switching to the new model. So what are the benefits of Flash 2.0? Specifically,Google said Flash 2.0 is an incremental update rather than a major version leap, and Flash 2.0 responds more quickly to tasks such as writing, learning, and brainstorming. However, Gemini now also runs the latest version of Imagen 3, which can meet image generation needs with higher accuracy.
Flash 2.0 is coming to the web and mobile devices, but it may be a phased rollout. Either way, Gemini updates are usually tied to the Google app as well, so before checking if you can access the new AI model, make sure to update both it and the Gemini app.
