Android earthquake alert feature expands to more regions and adds more detailed information

To give more people around the world precious golden time to seek shelter before disasters strike, Google has officially announced that it is expanding its Android Earthquake Alerts System to more than 200 countries and regions worldwide. Compared with the 98 regions previously covered, this is a major expansion, with earthquake-prone countries such as Panama and Guatemala now included in the protection network. Google said that since the system was introduced, it has successfully sent more than 1 billion earthquake early warning messages globally, making it an important milestone in the history of disaster prevention technology.

Android phones have had earthquake detection capabilities for several years. Google first introduced this early warning technology in August 2020, and its core principle is to make use of the built-in accelerometer in Android phones. The accelerometer is usually used to detect the phone’s orientation and screen rotation, but during an earthquake, it can accurately capture the tiny vibrations at the beginning of seismic waves.

When a large number of phones in a particular area simultaneously detect earthquake-like vibration signatures, that data is rapidly transmitted in de-identified form to Google’s cloud servers. Within a very short time, the servers integrate and analyze the data, calculate the earthquake’s potential epicenter and estimated magnitude, and then send real-time alerts to phone users around the area. This form of “crowdsourcing” allows regions that cannot afford to build expensive national earthquake monitoring networks to gain early warning protection through existing smartphone infrastructure.

The rollout of the Android earthquake early warning system has been a gradual process:

  • August 2020 (initial pilot): First launched in California, USA. However, California’s early warning system initially relied mainly on the U.S. Geological Survey’s (USGS) existing “ShakeAlert” official monitoring network, rather than entirely on smartphone sensors.
  • April 2021 (going overseas): Google began expanding its “smartphone-only sensing” early warning technology to Greece and New Zealand, and later that year further extended it to Turkey, the Philippines, Kazakhstan, and other countries located at tectonic plate boundaries.
  • 2023: India, a populous country, officially joined the early warning network.
  • 2024: Google successfully expanded its early warning service to all 50 U.S. states and 6 overseas territories, completing the rollout of a nationwide protective network.

In addition to expanding geographic coverage, Google is also continuously improving how alerts are presented, aiming to provide clearer, more useful information to people who have only seconds to respond. Currently, in supported regions, Android users receive three different levels of alert notifications based on shaking intensity:

  • Attention (Be Aware): Used for situations where only slight vibration is expected, providing a mild reminder.
  • “Be Prepared” (Drop, Cover, and Hold On): Used to warn of stronger shaking and remind the public to seek cover.
  • “Take Action”: For moderate to severe violent shaking, the phone will force a full-screen warning to pop up and emit a loud sound, instructing users to seek shelter immediately.

In the coming months, Google will roll out a major interface upgrade to its “Be Prepared” early warning system. After the upgrade, the system will not only send text notifications but also directly display a dynamic map of shaking detection areas, estimated magnitude, practical safety guidance, and a button that can be quickly clicked to access the latest official information, helping people make the most precise disaster-response decisions immediately.

Android phones in all currently supported regions have this earthquake early warning feature enabled by default, and users do not need to download an additional app. If users have special concerns, they can also manually turn it on or off at any time in the phone’s “Settings >> Safety & Emergency” menu. However, Google also acknowledges that the technology still has limits, and the system may not detect every earthquake 100% of the time. Because data transmission and computation take a very short time, in the “blind zone” very close to the epicenter, alerts may arrive after shaking has already begun, or even after it has ended. Nevertheless, this innovative application combining technology and a vast user network undoubtedly represents a breakthrough for global disaster preparedness and response mechanisms.
