Microsoft has announced that it will hold a new Windows and Surface launch event on October 7, 2026, in San Francisco, USA. This is not only Microsoft’s first major Windows event since the Copilot+ PC launch in 2024, but is also seen as an important turning point in the development of AI PCs. The event’s theme is “How Local AI Opens a New Chapter for PCs,” and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang, and Windows and Surface division head Pavan Davuluri will all attend in person, showing Microsoft’s high regard for the event.

After a 2-year hiatus, Microsoft will hold a major Windows launch event.

The market widely expects that the focus of this event will be on the all-new Surface Laptop Ultra, as well as the NVIDIA RTX Spark platform that powers it. Over the past six months, Microsoft and NVIDIA have frequently emphasized the goal of their collaboration: to redefine the role of Windows PCs in the AI era through powerful local AI computing capabilities.

In May this year, Microsoft was the first to unveil the Surface Laptop Ultra. This laptop features a clean, sleek design language while retaining rich I/O ports and an excellent cooling architecture, and is widely regarded as Microsoft’s flagship product to challenge the MacBook Pro. Coincidentally, NVIDIA also announced the RTX Spark chip on the same day, officially kicking off their collaboration. At the time, the two companies proclaimed the vision of “reinventing the Windows PC for the personal AI era,” hoping to make AI computing no longer reliant on the cloud, but able to run directly on-device.

Later, at the Build 2026 developer conference, Microsoft further revealed several Windows 11 core optimizations designed specifically for RTX Spark. These include a new workload scheduling system that can more effectively allocate tasks to a 20-core CPU; they also strengthen Prism emulation on the Arm platform, improving the execution efficiency of legacy x86 applications. These updates are not only optimizations for a single piece of hardware, but may also influence the overall future direction of the Windows ecosystem.

Recently, the Surface team has continued to release teasers via social media, showcasing the Surface Laptop Ultra’s cooling design, port configuration, and AI feature use cases. The latest promotional video uses “Get ready for the next step” as its tagline, further raising market expectations. Surface Vice President Brett Ostrum even described it as “the most powerful Surface Laptop ever.”

According to current information, the Surface Laptop Ultra will feature an RTX GPU based on NVIDIA Blackwell architecture, can be configured with up to 128GB of unified memory, and fully supports the CUDA ecosystem. Microsoft claims that the device can run AI models with up to 120 billion parameters locally, bringing more powerful AI computing capabilities to developers, creators, and enterprise users.

In addition to its laptop products, Microsoft previously also showcased the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box. This compact desktop also uses the RTX Spark platform and is mainly aimed at AI developers and research teams, so Microsoft is expected to announce more specifications and launch information at the event. Notably, brands such as Dell, Lenovo, and ASUS have already released new models equipped with RTX Spark technology, showing that the AI PC ecosystem is rapidly taking shape. However, products from these companies still lack comprehensive performance data to date, so Microsoft’s event may also become an important moment for verifying RTX Spark’s true capabilities.

Although the event invitation bears the Windows logo, the outside world should not expect the arrival of Windows 12. Microsoft has long made it clear that its current focus is not launching a brand-new operating system, but rather deepening hardware-software integration to enhance the Windows 11 experience in the AI era. In fact, since the debut of Copilot+ PCs, Microsoft has not fully met market expectations in the AI PC space. From the privacy controversy sparked by the Recall feature to the Copilot key’s long-standing lack of practical use, consumers have questioned the maturity of its AI strategy. Therefore, this new platform centered on RTX Spark is seen as an important opportunity for Microsoft to prove its AI vision anew.

For Microsoft, October 7 is not just a product launch, but a critical validation of the direction Windows will take. If Microsoft can successfully deliver on the promise of local AI and intelligent agent (Agent) computing, Windows PCs may be headed for their most meaningful transformation since the arrival of Copilot; otherwise, this event will also become the market’s first major test of the results of its AI strategy.
