Nintendo Receives Tariff Refund! Confirms It Will Hold a Major Promotion to Give Back to Players

Nintendo of America has announced that it will soon launch a “Player Appreciation Sale,” offering limited-time discounts of up to 30% off on a large selection of games on the eShop, and according to Nintendo, the reason it is holding this event is related to tariff refunds it received from the United States.

In a newly releasedStatementIn it, Nintendo said the promotion was its way of thanking fans, and that the promotion was possible in part thanks to tariff-related refunds. Although Nintendo bore most of the tariff-related costs, the refunds allowed it to launch promotions like this to give back to players.

Like Sony and Microsoft, Nintendo recently received a tariff refund from the U.S. government. Over the past year, U.S. President Trump implemented a new wave of tariff policies targeting countries around the world, but while discussions and implementation were still underway, the policy was ruled illegal by the U.S. Supreme Court, ultimately resulting in all tariffs already paid being refunded.

To give back to players, Nintendo announced it will hold this “Player Thank You Sale” from September 13 to 26, offering limited-time discounts on the official eShop, Nintendo Store, and at select retailers. Promotions will vary by retailer, but consumers can expect discounts on digital and physical games, DLC, accessories, amiibo, apparel, and more.

As of now, many companies have already received large tariff refunds, and each company has handled these refunds differently. Some, like Nintendo, have decided to launch similar promotional campaigns or lower prices on the products they sell. But some game companies have taken a more direct approach. For example, Panic, the company behind the Playdate handheld gaming console, has promised to refund the tariff amount to the consumers who ended up paying more because of it, and eligible consumers are expected to receive $12 each.
