Google appears to be preparing to launch an entirely new wearable device. According to recently exposed FCC certification documents, a mysterious piece of hardware developed by Google and running the Wear OS operating system has quietly appeared, sparking widespread speculation about its product positioning.
A new Google hardware device has passed FCC certification: a fitness tracker running Wear OS.
This certification data shows that the product is temporarily officially called “Wireless Device” and is manufactured by Goertek. Goertek has previously manufactured multiple generations of Pixel Buds true wireless earbuds for Google, so the two companies have a long-standing partnership. More notably, the product’s model number is “G8BL6,” and its naming convention is consistent with Google’s own hardware products released in recent years, further increasing the likelihood that it is a Google device.
Another key clue in the FCC documents comes from the electronic label (e-label) information. The documents show that users can view the device’s relevant certification information via Settings > System > Regulatory info. This navigation path is exactly the same as that of the current Pixel Watch, so it is widely believed that the device likely runs on the Wear OS platform. In addition, records related to the Android Debug Bridge (ADB) debugging tool also appeared during the certification testing process, and ADB has long been a common development and testing tool for Android and Wear OS devices, further reinforcing this speculation.
In terms of connectivity, the document states that the product supports Bluetooth Low Energy and GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System), including GPS positioning. The Bluetooth module also uses a metal-frame antenna design to improve signal stability and reception performance. Surprisingly, however, no information related to Wi-Fi functionality has been found in the document so far. For a product that may run Wear OS, the lack of Wi-Fi support is quite unusual, and has therefore sparked market discussion about its positioning and use cases.
Based on the available information, the G8BL6 is most likely a brand-new Google fitness tracker. If the speculation is correct, this would be the first time Wear OS has launched in a form other than a smartwatch, creating a new hardware category. However, Wear OS has higher system resource requirements than traditional fitness bands, so whether the device can maintain sufficient battery life has also become a focus of attention.
