A legendary player used reverse engineering to successfully port GTA V to the Nintendo Switch.

You might find it hard to believe, but GTA V (Grand Theft Auto 5), a game released in 2013, was actually ported to the Nintendo Switch by independent developers 13 years later. The developers recompiled the game logic for the ARM architecture so it runs natively. The development team Paralympics Productions used the GTA V source code leaked by the hacking group LAPSUS$ in 2023, and after reverse engineering, successfully got this classic open-world game running directly on the Switch’s Tegra X1 chip, without any emulation layer.

GTA V corriendo en Nintendo Switch.

– Nativo sin Android ni Linux (No es Stream).
– Pesa 49GB.
– Ocupas Overclock (Yo uso Sys-CLK que es seguro) pero si usas Horizon OC irá mucho mejor.
– Corriendo en mi OLED sin modificaciones de RAM, puro Overclock seguro.

A god-tier player successfully ported GTA V to Nintendo Switch

The core foundation of this porting project comes from the incident of the hacker group LAPSUS$ breaching Rockstar Games in late 2022. At the time, Arion Kurtaj, a 17-year-old British hacker, successfully stole the complete source code of GTA V before the entire group was arrested. This data was leaked through Telegram channels in December 2023.

After obtaining the source code, Paralympics Productions (developer account @M0jso) reverse-engineered the game logic and recompiled it to the ARM instruction set, allowing GTA V to run natively on the Switch’s NVIDIA Tegra X1 SoC. This means zero performance overhead from emulation—the game communicates directly with the hardware. Since the compilation target is the ARM architecture, the same code could theoretically also run on Android devices, and the development team’s Discord channel has hinted that an Android port is on the way.

However, the leaked source code is for the GTA V Legacy version (PS4/Xbox One/PC), not the earlier PS3/Xbox 360 version. This posed additional challenges for the port: the PS3 and Xbox 360 only had 512MB of unified memory, and their corresponding game assets were smaller, making it much easier to compress them into the Switch’s 4GB memory. But developers were dealing with the PC version’s high-resolution assets, which had to undergo extensive compression first, and then modified configuration files were used to reduce draw distance and particle effect counts so that the Switch’s hardware wouldn’t be instantly overloaded.

Actual performance: 10-25 FPS without overclocking, stable 30 FPS after overclocking.

Based on actual testing, in an unoverclocked state, GTA V’s frame rate on the Switch fluctuates between about 10 and 25 FPS, depending on the Switch model and chip quality. To get a relatively smooth experience, players need to overclock the CPU, GPU, and memory using the sys-clk tool. After moderate overclocking on the Switch OLED, the game can maintain around 30 FPS in simple scenes, but the frame rate still drops noticeably when large numbers of NPCs or explosion scenes appear.

Overall performance is comparable to the PS3/Xbox 360 versions. Load times are within an acceptable range, handheld mode doesn’t overheat excessively, and battery drain is about the same as other demanding games. The Joy-Con controls feel somewhat heavy and aren’t well suited for scenarios requiring precise inputs, but many players have already successfully cleared the opening missions and freely explored the open world, with save functionality working properly as well.

The r/SwitchPirates community on Reddit responded enthusiastically, with a user sharing hands-on footage of GTA V running on Switch 2 with light overclocking in late August, sparking extensive discussion. However, since the game’s source is not from official channels, and hacking the Switch, installing third-party games, and overclocking also carry risks, we do not recommend trying it. Just know that if Rockstar were willing, GTA V should be portable to the Switch platform; it’s simply a matter of whether the company wants to do so.
