Apple is re-evaluating its product line and the next iPad may ditch traditional naming

The iPad product line may be standing at a subtle but critical turning point, and this change does not come from the hardware, but from Apple’s rethinking of product positioning and naming strategies. in the near futureInterviewed by Tom’s GuideAt that time, Apple’s top hardware engineering executive John Ternus and marketing chief Greg Joswiak made a rare remission, saying that the company was considering adjusting the naming method of iPad, which is to abandon the “X generation” naming system that has been used for more than ten years.

Although this information is just a conversation in the interview, it reveals that there may be a deeper strategic discussion going on within Apple. The report pointed out that Apple hopes to make the naming of the iPad simpler and more consistent, and may even be closer to the naming method of the Mac, using the year or a purer product name instead of using the generation or chip model as the main identification.

Such adjustments may seem like superficial engineering, but they actually reflect Apple’s repositioning of the iPad’s role. Over the years, the naming of iPads has indeed become more and more complicated. The entry-level model is called “iPad (11th generation)”, but most people will only call it “iPad”; the high-end iPad Pro begins to be identified by the chip, such as “iPad Pro (M5)”. Different naming logics are mixed in the same product line, which fragments the overall identification and makes it more difficult for ordinary consumers to understand product differences.

If Apple really adopts a more unified naming method, it can indeed reduce confusion and make the product line easier to understand, especially as the iPad product portfolio continues to expand. A clear naming strategy is not only a marketing issue, but also part of the product strategy.

More importantly, this change is closely related to the evolution of iPad’s positioning. In the past few years, the iPad has gradually transformed from a “large iPhone” into a complete productivity computing platform. With iPadOS 26 introducing multi-tasking capabilities, external monitor support and professional-level applications that are closer to desktop systems, Apple is gradually pushing the iPad into the direction of “laptop replacement”.

在这样的背景下,命名方式的调整就不只是品牌美学,而是认知管理。 Apple may hope that the iPad will give people the impression of being closer to the Mac, a mature product that does not need to rely on “several generations” to prove its value, but rather defines its positioning through experience and functionality.

For consumers, changes in naming methods will also directly affect purchasing decisions. At this stage, if you want to understand the iPad product line, you must understand the generation, chip model, product level and functional differences at the same time. For ordinary users who do not track every update, this will undoubtedly increase the purchase threshold. If the naming is more concise, consumers can more intuitively understand which iPad is suitable for them.

However, there is another side to simplifying naming. When products are no longer distinguished by “X generation”, it may be more difficult for consumers to identify the latest styles at a glance. If Apple changes to year naming, such as “iPad 2027”, although it is more intuitive, it also means that users need to pay more attention to specification details instead of relying on clear generation labels.

Apple has yet to officially announce any changes, and these messages are just early signs, but the timing is no coincidence. Apple has fully adopted year naming on the software side, such as iOS 26 and iPadOS 26, which shows that the company is moving in the direction of cross-platform consistency; if the hardware naming also follows suit, a more complete ecosystem language will be formed. If Apple really launches this change on the next-generation iPad, it may not change the performance or functionality of the product itself, but it may reshape the iPad’s market positioning and user image in the next few years. For a product line that has existed for more than ten years, such adjustments may have a more long-term impact than hardware upgrades.
