When it comes to the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 graphics card, the first thing that many people think of is its extremely powerful performance and extremely high power consumption, with a TDP of up to 450W. There have been many test reports on the Internet pointing out that although the TDP setting of the RTX 4090 is very high, most games will not actually run to such high power consumption. Recently, a very interesting actual measurement comparison appeared abroad. After limiting the TDP of the RTX 4090, they found that even if the power consumption was only half, the game performance only dropped by 8%, which means that the power consumption ratio of this card is quite good.

Recently, the South Korean QuasarZone website published a test report of NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090. In the report, they tested 5 games, namely “Cyberpunk 2077”, “Marvel Spider-Man Remastered Edition”, “Lost Ark”, “Forza Horizon 5” and “PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds”. The image quality was set at 4K and the highest quality, and then calculated the FPS average.

The test platform is as follows:

  • CPU processor: Intel Core i9-13900K
  • Motherboard: ASUS ROG MAXIMUS Z790 EXTREME
  • RAM Memory: OLOy Blade RGB DDR5-6800 (16GBx2)
  • Graphics card: NVIDIA RTX 4090 FE 24GB
  • Hard drive: WD Black SN750 M.2 2280 1TB
  • Operating system: Windows 11 Pro 22H2

The comparison standard is the default TDP of 347W, which is set to 100%. Then the power is limited to 90%~60%, and the test is performed every 10% drop, which are 340W, 326W, 305W and 268W respectively. As can be seen from the figure below, even if the power is limited to 60%, the performance is only about 6% lower than that of unlimited:

At the bottom of the picture above is the limit voltage, which also has four intervals. The most noteworthy one is the 850mV one. The clock speed becomes 2,460MHz and the power is only 232W, which is already half of the unlimited voltage. However, the game performance results show that it only dropped less than 8%. The difference is very small. Basically no one should feel it.

That’s less than 1% FPS, and the gap is even smaller:

It can be seen that NVIDIA’s power consumption ratio is very good. Whether it is limiting power or voltage, it can greatly improve power efficiency, and achieve higher performance with lower power consumption.

Players will have to study it themselves on how to adjust it. Basically, the power limit ratio is simple. Tools such as MSI Afterburner provide a graphical operating interface, just slide the slider.
